As of June 1, 2010, the Minnesota State Demographic Center estimated that Cook County has a total population of 5,441. Estimates of specific areas within the county are as follows:
Grand Marais | 1,426 | |
Lutsen | 420 | |
Tofte | 257 | |
Schroeder | 192 | |
Unorganized | 3,146 |
Thecounty has 2,583 households, and the average number of people per household is 2.08. All 58 of the county’s “group quarters” are in Grand Marais. Thearea with the least number of people per household is Lutsen, with 1.97. Tofte has the most, with 2.18 people per household, which is only .21 people more per household than Lutsen – a shade more than one-fifth of a person.
Themost recent Department of Natural Resources aerial survey of the moose population in northeastern Minnesota roughly from Virginia east to the Tip of the Arrowhead (Grand Portage), conducted in January and February of this year, came up with an estimate of 5,528 moose, give or take an estimated error rate of 1,318 moose they weren’t sure about.
Apparently counting people is a bit easier than counting moose.
