Cook County swimmer Tristan Surbaugh competed Feb. 24 at the Minnesota State Championship meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Tristan qualified in one individual event and two relays alongside three Duluth swimmers. Over 1,000 swimmers from 19 teams attended the meet and battled to earn points for their team and have a chance at being named state champions.
Individuals and relays score points by placing in the top 16. A first-place finish earns the team 20 points, a second-place finish 17, and a third-place 16 and so forth. Points are tallied at the end of the meet, and a team winner is announced.
Champions are also named in each age group.
Tristan swam backstroke in the 14 and under 200 medley relay with three Duluth swimmers. They took seventh place with a time of 2:51.58.
Tristan swam the 100 backstroke and placed 14th with a time of 1:35.55. He also swam third along with three Duluth swimmers in the 200 free relay. They placed seventh with a time of 2:25.21.
