In addition to attending interesting newspaper related workshops and enjoying the opportunity to interact with news industry colleagues at the Minnesota Newspaper Association (MNA) Convention in Bloomington, MN on January 28-29, several Cook County News-Herald
staffers were on hand at a Thursday night banquet to see Jane Howard receive a first place award in the 2009-2010 MNA Better Newspaper Contest.
Howard received the first place award in the Social Issues category with her February 28, 2009 article Dyslexia: disability or different ability?
which featured local instructor—and person with dyslexia—Kim Carlsted-Gillis. Howard’s thoughtful and sensitive handling of this issue touched the newspaper contest judges, as it did Cook County News-Herald
readers. The judges wrote:
This article demonstrates a pertinent topic,
creative delivery and good information organization.
The closing paragraph is a beautiful thought.
Introduction was interest grabbing and well
thought out. Dyslexia awareness is very important
to keep students going in the right direction.
The News-Herald
was also called forward to receive two other awards, for second place in Advertising Excellence and Use of Photography as a Whole.
Of the photography award, the newspaper contest judges wrote:
Striking layouts with colorful combinations of
multiple photos. I liked the creativity and freshness
of this approach, and photos were great throughout.
Lots of good action and interaction.
The judges were also very complimentary in the Advertising Excellence category, writing:
Good use of directories. Winter section had a
nice use of color and great ad count.
TheNews-Herald
awards were in the category of weeklies with a circulation of 2,501-5,000. The Better Newspaper Contest entries (all 3,100 of them) were judged by news people affiliated with the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association.
