Cook County needs census takers

Need a temporary job? Does $24 an hour sound good to you? How about $24 per hour, and you can make your own schedule? Work as little or as much as you would like?

Then being a census counter might be for you.

The 2020 census will soon be underway, and census takers are needed in Cook County.

Every ten years since 1790, the United States has undertaken the massive job of counting its population.

How important is getting an accurate count? According to the census bureau, census results are used to determine your representation in Congress, and they help determine how $675 billion are distributed annually for hospitals, schools, roads, and more.

Temporary positions for the 2020 census feature flexible hours—a perfect fit if you are looking to make extra money.

“We need to hire 140 census workers in Cook County,” said interim County Administrator Rena Rogers.

Why so many?

In the year 2000, only 37 percent of Cook County residents responded to the census. In 2010, only 41 percent participated in the census. Meanwhile, in 2010, Rogers said outside of Cook County, more than 80 percent of the rest of the state of Minnesota took part in the count.

Completing the census is mandatory. It’s stated in the U.S. Constitution that everyone in the country is to be counted. The results of the count are used to reapportion the House of Representatives, which determines how many House seats each state gets.

The information you provide on a census is protected, and cannot be used against you or used to produce statistics. In 2020 you will be able to respond to the census online.

Census data is also used for a variety of other things, like planning school projects, determining areas eligible for housing assistance and rehabilitation loans, planning for public transportation services, planning future government services, designing public safety strategies, etc.

To apply for a census taker job, you must be 18 or older, be a U.S. citizen, have a Social Security number, and have an email address. You will also need access to a vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license unless public transportation is readily available. Males born after December 31, 1959, must also be registered with the Selective Service System or have a qualifying exemption.

During training, census workers will be paid at a slightly lower rate than they will receive when they start working. Employees are paid weekly and can expect to receive their first paycheck approximately 10-14 days after their first day of work. Mileage is reimbursed at 58 cents per mile.
