Lutsen resident Andrew Beavers has been busy getting ready to race five mountain bike races this year. Some of the events will be ridden through the snow on fat tires.

Andrew Beavers, age 36, is a project manager for Cascade Vacation Rentals in Cook County. He has worked and lived in Cook County for 13 years.

His boss Mike Larson, a co-owner with Steve Surbaugh of Cascade Vacation Rentals, is one of the originators of the Lutsen 99er. Larson’s enthusiasm for biking was inspiring, according to Beavers.

So as part of Cascade Vacation Rentals workplace personal goals program, he committed to doing five bike races this year, with the final race being the Lutsen 99er during June 2018.

This year’s Norpine will be Beavers’ first winter race. He has heard from other cyclists that “you never know what kind of weather you are going to get for the Norpine until you get there.” He’s super excited about the race, but also nervous about figuring out how to dress for the weather.

Beavers’ first bike race was the Chequamegon Short n Fat, followed by the Sawtooth Mountain Bike Challenge. He says he can’t think of a cooler place to be if you enjoy cycling, especially when the trail is right outside your back door. “With all the new trails, biking is becoming synonymous with Cook County – both for visitors and people like me who live here.”

Beavers is excited about the new agreement allowing fat bikers to share the cross-country trails with cross-country skiers. “Both cross-country skiers and fat bikers are looking for the peacefulness and meditative state that you experience when traveling through the woods quietly.”
