Is it cool to be good at math? You bet! The Cook County sixth grade Math Masters teams went to the regional competition in Superior, Wisconsin Friday, March 12 and did not feel nerdy at all. Thetwo Cook County Middle School teams of five kids finished third and seventh out of 30 teams from around the northland. Joe Rauzi was the top scorer in third place out of 152 students. All of our kids did very well and were feeling pretty cool after the competition.
Each student completed a fiveminute fact drill, three individual 10-minute rounds of word problems and a tiebreaker round. Then they joined forces to work in teams of five for the final round. Thepencils were flying over the paper and the calculators were clicking as they worked through their tests. It was inspiring to see so many young people focused and intent on their work.
The Math Masters kids met once a week for most of the school year to work on problems and speed up their fact skills with coach Dave Seaton. Team members were: Sam Kern, Anika Schwarz, Pete Summers, Shauna Blake, Frankie Miller, Joe Rauzi, Madison Roy, Sean MacDonnell, Ben Resek, and Will Seaton. Congratulations to our Math Masters!
