When looking at local 2022 lodging tax collections, it’s obvious that Cook County remains a popular place for vacationers to visit.
Cook County Auditor/Treasurer Braidy Powers presented the Lodging Tax Comparison report to the county board at the commissioner’s January 24 meeting.
As of November 30, 2022, the Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association reported taking in $20,300.30 in lodging taxes for November compared to $41,149.47 for the same month in 2021. Through 11 months, the LTA has brought in $1,061.702.03, which is down 7.7 percent from the same period in 2021. Still, 2021 was a record year for lodging in the county, and through 11 months, the LTA is already ahead of annual totals for every other year except for 2021.
The Grand Marais Tourism Association was down almost $5,000 for the “heads on beds” tax for November compared to last November. However, with tax receipts of $417,120.60 through 11 months, the GTA is 2.8 percent ahead of last year for the same period. GTA tax collections are at $417,120.50 for 11 months.
After a record year in 2021, tax collections are only slightly minus 0.5 percent year-to-date for the Gunflint Trail Association. November 2022 collections were $1,917.86 versus $2,942,78 in November 2021. Through 11 months, the GTA has collected $1,917,86, while taxes totaled $222,332,16 for 12 months in 2021.
