Monday, Aug. 2

11:35 a.m., Hovland: The occupants of a van were seen dumping eight bags of trash in the Dumpster at Chicago Bay Market. A deputy stopped the van near Five Mile Rock and the party of six was told to go back and pick up the trash they dumped illegally, and find someplace legal to dump it.

11:43 a.m., Grand Marais: Maplewood woman, 48, cited for speeding.

1:29 p.m., Grand Portage: Fire department reported a grass fire on the old sawmill road. It was put out.

1:56 p.m., Lutsen: A charter bus lost its brakes coming down the Caribou Trail and went into the ditch to avoid going onto the highway. Thebus was unloaded and 44 kids and luggage were transferred onto another bus.

2:30 p.m., Grand Marais: Child abuse investigation.

3:45 p.m., Hovland: Caller concerned that campers who have been at the old Flute Reed campground for the past 6-7 weeks are there illegally.

4:18 p.m., Lutsen: Pick-up truck cut the corner in front of Clearview and was stuck in the ditch, blocking the westbound lane of the highway. A tow truck was called.

6:23 p.m., Grand Marais: Minneapolis woman, 68, cited for speeding.

6:50 p.m., Grand Portage: Customs took a Florida man into custody who had a full extradition warrant, and held him for authorities.

11:40 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy requested by a child who said his mother just assaulted his sister and tried to come after him. No medical attention was needed.

Tuesday, Aug. 3

10:30 a.m., Grand Marais: An Ontario vehicle was seen coming down the hill into Grand Marais, passing on the right shoulder.

12:18 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of a gold vehicle parked in front of Joynes for at least half an hour with a dog inside panting and in rough shape.

2:29 p.m., Grand Marais: Duluth driver, 17, cited for speeding.

2:52 p.m., Grand Marais: Wyoming, Minn., man cited for speeding.

7:33 p.m., Grand Marais: Grand Portage man, 29, cited for possession of a small amount of marijuana.

10:47 p.m., Grand Marais: Moose struck by a vehicle near the Pines. The Illinois vehicle sustained minor damage and the moose, apparently uninjured, ran off into the woods.

Wednesday, Aug. 4

6:08 a.m., Hovland: St. Paul man, 50, arrested for DWI following an accident at 4901 E. Highway 61.

12:08 p.m., Grand Portage: Report of kids playing with fire near the play area. The fire department visited and got everything under control.

2:04 p.m., Lutsen: Cabin owner returned to discover that his place had been broken into.

3:31 p.m., Grand Marais: A deputy spoke with skateboarders who were hindering pedestrian and vehicle traffic near the bank downtown.

Thursday, Aug. 5

1:09 a.m., Grand Marais: Suicide reported.

1:32 a.m., Grand Marais: Noise complaint about shouting. A deputy checked the area of the Birch Terrace and Rec Park but was unable to hear anything. 7:53 a.m., Grand Marais: Credit card fraud reported.

5:29 p.m., Tofte: Ambulance requested for an elderly man who fell on the rocks at Gull Harbor.

5:59 p.m., Grand Marais: Minneapolis man, 46, cited for speeding and no proof of insurance.

6:08 p.m., Grand Marais: Parking complaint.

7:47 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy requested at a residence where an unwanted man was trying to start a fight.

8:01 p.m., Grand Marais: A man who was kicked out of the GunFlint Tavern was seen walking down the street with no shirt on, trying to pick fights.

8:48 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy investigated a hold-up alarm at Subway. It was a false alarm, but there had been a bad customer who already left.

8:58 p.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais woman arrested for DWI after she was seen swerving all over the highway.

9:58 p.m., Grand Marais: Truck on fire at a home near the hospital.

Friday, Aug. 6

1:18 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputies were called to a party on County Road 7. Two people fled.

10:14 a.m., Grand Marais: Game warden notified about a camper and pick-up that have been parked at Paradise Beach wayside for a week.

11:10 a.m., Grand Marais: Parking complaint.

12:17 p.m., Grand Marais: A Two Harbors man, 50, was arrested for drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia after a deputy stopped his logging truck in town near the Rec Park. Thevehicle was seen driving erratically, and when pulled over, the driver requested an ambulance for a bee sting reaction. However, he refused treatment and a search of the vehicle yielded meth, marijuana, meth pipes and marijuana paraphernalia.

3:50 p.m., Grand Marais: Boater on the harbor reported a bunch of kids out at the western lighthouse who appeared to be marking it with graffiti. A deputy checked the area and the report was unfounded.

4:10 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy assisted in removing children from their parents (court ordered).

4:34 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of littering along the highway.

4:39 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy assisted a woman who tipped her moped near the water tower.

4:58 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputies help reunite a lost 8-year-old boy with his family downtown.

6:04 p.m., Grand Marais: Stolen medication reported.

8:38 p.m., Grand Marais: Dead deer removed from the middle of the road near mile marker 93.

8:47 p.m., Grand Portage: Pine City man cited for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

8:54 p.m., Grand Marais: Cabin owner returned to find that his generator had been stolen.

9:15 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of a loud explosion, similar to the one last year (pipe bomb). Deputies could not find the source.

9:29 p.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais man arrested for domestic assault by strangulation.

9:31 p.m., Lutsen: Fire department called for a trailer on fire behind Lockport.

10:23 p.m., Grand Portage: Gunshots heard near Eliza and Margaret’s roads.

Saturday, Aug. 7

11:11 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputies responded to a loud party complaint at the Two Island campground that had gone on all night. The responsible partiers, a softball team, were made to leave. Also, the complainant originally said he went over to ask the people to quiet down and was threatened with baseball bats; he later said he wasn’t actually threatened, but felt threatened because he knew they had baseball bats.

11:26 a.m., Grand Marais: Parking complaint on Coast Guard Point about cars parking on the beach and picnic area.

12:01 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller requested assistance with getting her vehicle un-stuck from the gravel at Paradise Beach, about 500 feet down from the campsite. The vehicle was “buried” and a wrecker was unable to pull it out, as were others who were contacted. A person with a Bobcat said he could probably free it and responded. A game warden advised the woman that she was responsible for any damage done to the beach.

12:20 p.m., Grand Marais: Gas driveoff of $48.33.

12:26 p.m., Lutsen: A couple said they interrupted a vehicle break-in at Brule Lake landing. Two young men ran down to the beach and left in a canoe; the front passenger window was smashed and the door open.

12:38 p.m., Grand Marais: Complaint that an elderly man made inappropriate advances to a juvenile outside the clinic.

2:24 p.m., Grand Marais: Campers at Temperance warned about loud noise.

2:38 p.m., Grand Marais: An elderly woman was found wandering and confused at Third Avenue West and Third Street.

3:00 p.m., Tofte: Holiday reported a gas drive-off.

4:25 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported that he can hear a woman continuously knocking on the door and he doesn’t know what the problem is. He then heard her asking for help.

7:13 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller asked a deputy to put a stop to a neighbor firing off a large-caliber gun. Theman said he was done shooting for the night anyhow.

11:21 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of a man standing in the middle of the road shining a flashlight at passing vehicles.

Sunday, Aug. 8

12:18 a.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais juvenile, 14, cited for underage consumption.

1:02 a.m., Grand Marais: Loud music complaint.

1:13 a.m., Grand Marais: Fight reported at the Legion. It was just an argument.

1:35 a.m., Grand Marais: Report that a man was being verbally abusive to a woman.

2:10 a.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais woman, 20, cited for underage drinking and possession of drug paraphernalia.

2:31 a.m., Grand Marais: Loud noise complaint.

7:19 a.m., Grand Marais: A white SUV was discovered down the ravine on County Road 6; it appeared to have rolled a few times but nobody was around. A 911 call came in a short time later about a man who was in an accident and couldn’t move his legs. An ambulance took him to the hospital.

10:56 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of bear-damaged window screens and siding. Game warden notified.

4:15 p.m., Grand Marais: A truck parked at Birch Terrace was keyed on both sides. It has happened before, said the owner.

6:05 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy assisted an 8-year-old boy who was separated from his family. His sister was “somewhere downtown.”
