Wednesday, June 30

6:18 a.m., Grand Marais: Deer struck by a vehicle and still alive on the highway, about five miles east of town.

11:55 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller complained about logging trucks almost running him off TheGrade a second time.

2:12 p.m., Grand Marais: An iPod Nano was found on the sidewalk near the library.

5:31 p.m., Lutsen: Deputy requested to deal with someone who was exhibition driving on private property.

6:25 p.m., Lutsen: Two gunshots heard.

8:05 p.m., Grand Portage: Caller reported that while she was out working in her garden, someone was in her bedroom and went through all her things (the bedroom was a mess) but nothing appeared to be missing.

Thursday, July 1

11:09 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported that there were some Hispanic males near Crescent Lake, appearing as though they wanted him to stop. As he drove closer, he noticed four or five more waiting in the woods; they were in a red Ford extended cab truck.

12:03 p.m., Grand Marais: DNR reported that somebody spraypainted Smokey Bear’s face red. There were more spray-painted symbols near Thoreson’s driveway, as well as an obscenity on County Road 7 near the LEC.

7:36 p.m., Schroeder: Woman suffered a broken leg and was lifeflighted from Satellite’s following a motorcycle accident near mile marker 75.

11:27 p.m., Grand Portage: Suspicious activity reported.

Friday, July 2

12:31 a.m., Grand Marais: Noise complaint.

9:03 a.m., Grand Marais: Onevehicle accident on Highway 61. No injuries.

11:15 a.m., Grand Marais: Minneapolis man, 66, cited for no seat belt.

11:32 a.m., Grand Marais: Plymouth, Ind., man, 60, cited for no seat belt.

6:37 p.m., Grand Marais: Report that a driver ran over the curb at IGA, finished off a can of beer and was in the store shopping. A breath test for alcohol came back negative. The driver had been drinking a bottle of ginger ale.

10:18 p.m., Grand Marais: Sven & Ole’s reported someone called in a large pizza order ($168) on a cell phone and gave an address for delivery. No one was home, and when the driver went back a second time, the owner was home but said he had nothing to do with the pizza order. There was no answer on the cell phone number.

Saturday, July 3

2:52 a.m., Grand Marais: An unconscious man who was lying in the middle of the intersection at the hospital was found to be intoxicated. He was taken home to his wife.

8:51 a.m., Grand Marais: Motorcycle accident on Highway 61 in front of the Pie Place.

11:49 a.m., Grand Marais: Report that the driver of a maroon minivan had a toddler sitting in the driver’s seat with him.

12:06 p.m., Grand Marais: Someone put a lock on a bicycle and left a note saying, “Stop stealing bikes, burn in hell.”

12:39 p.m., Grand Marais: vehicle in the ditch near Five Mile Rock. 5:46 p.m., Grand Marais: Forest Service contacted about a tree hanging over the road just west of Baker Lane Road.

6:52 p.m., Hovland: Motorist reported seeing a man with a rifle in a yard a mile west of Magney State Park. Theman was crouched down like he was looking for something. Deputies spoke with the man, who said he was just waiting for the gopher that got into his garden.

8:16 p.m., Grand Marais: An object thought to be an overturned kayak on Lake Superior was a log.

10:53 p.m., Grand Marais: Fireworks complaint.

Sunday, July 4

12:02 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputy requested after the caller heard someone yelling “No!” and doors slamming at his neighbor’s. The house was dark. A man answered the door and said he had been asleep and didn’t hear anything.

2:13 a.m., Grand Marais: Loud party complaint.

9:08 a.m., Tofte: Vehicle accident on the highway near the Ranger Station. No injuries.

10:11 a.m., Grand Marais: Report that there were two kids at the library and one had a crutch stuck in the book deposit slot.

10:40 a.m., Grand Portage: Gas drive-off of $75.25 from Ryden’s.

3:15 p.m., Grand Marais: Gas driveoff of $48.87.

8:51 p.m., Grand Marais: A pick-up with a loud exhaust went down First Avenue West and the caller believed it struck something near the pharmacy. An eyewitness said nothing was struck, and the truck headed west on the highway.

9:15 p.m., Grand Marais: Thunder Bay man, 21, cited for speeding.

10:23 p.m., Grand Portage: Car-deer accident with no injuries.

11:05 p.m., Grand Marais: Hibbing man, 20, cited for speeding.

11:24 p.m., Grand Marais: Two vehicles drove off without paying for gas. One owed $70.43, the other $25.

Monday, July 5

12:54 a.m., Grand Portage: Quebec man, 20, cited for possession of a marijuana pipe.

1:23 a.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais man, 37, arrested for domestic assault and booked into jail.

1:26 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller said he opened a door to one of the porta-potties in Boulder Park and there was a man inside, either dead or sleeping, but he didn’t want to go in and check. A deputy found the man, who said he was just looking for a place to sleep for the night.

5:37 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of an injured gray bird on the deck at the Shoreline. It was believed to be a baby seagull that couldn’t fly yet. DNR notified.

9:13 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy located and brought back a 13-yearold boy who took off from his mother and ran down the Gunflint Trail after calling her names and swearing. The dispute started because she took his cell phone away.

9:52 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of a black lab lying near somebody’s back door, apparently with something wrong, as he won’t move or walk. A deputy responded, and the dog jumped into the back seat of the squad car. He was taken to the pound and later released to his owner.

10:36 p.m., Lutsen: Complaint about a neighbor using a chainsaw after 10 p.m. A deputy spoke with the man, who stopped for the night.

Tuesday, July 6

9:23 a.m., Grand Marais: Wedding ring lost at Mink Lake.

3:44 p.m., Grand Marais: A 20-yearold Norwester Lodge employee was stuck up in a tree and had a badly cut hand. Gunflint Trail Ambulance paged.

5:27 p.m., Grand Marais: Stolen iPod report.

6:27 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of a domestic argument, both verbal and physical, and happening both inside and outside the residence. 10:44 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy called to remove kids from the skateboard park and playground.

11:18 p.m., Grand Marais: Two men, 20, cited for underage consumption of alcohol.

Wednesday, July 7

1:29 a.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about a group of very loud men who leave the Birch every night between 1 and 2 a.m. and run through the street yelling, screaming or swearing. A deputy checked the area, but nobody was around.

8:42 a.m., Lutsen: Cathedral of the Pines requested the fire department to make sure a small grass fire near the propane tanks was out.

9:40 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputy requested for a fender-bender in the Holiday parking lot.

9:58 a.m., Grand Marais: The motors of two tow boats owned by Tuscarora Lodge and kept at the Sag Lake Landing were tampered with (oil contaminated). The same thing happened last year.

10:45 a.m., Grand Marais: Two Peruvian Cincuenta Intos ($50) bills were found in the courthouse parking lot, along with a note. A message was left for the owner, whose number was on the note.

4:40 p.m., Grand Marais: A downtown business complained about people climbing up on the roof to put baby seagulls back on it. The manager said the chicks fall every year, and people need to stay off the property.

8:15 p.m., Grand Marais: Drug investigation resulted in the arrest of a Grand Marais man for selling a controlled substance and possession of a small amount.

Thursday, July 8

1:05 a.m., Grand Marais: Burglar alarm at the Border Patrol office was believed to be set off by the high humidity. An agent was notified.

11:12 a.m., Tofte: Search & Rescue got permission from the Forest Service to take a motorized boat into the BWCA to bring out a 23-year-old woman coming off Cherokee Lake with a broken leg. 2:10 p.m., Grand Marais: Cell phone found at the pharmacy.

Friday, July 9

7:06 a.m., Lutsen: Parking complaint about a van parked in front of a residential garage.

7:23 p.m., Grand Marais: Sheriff notified by St. Louis County about a parental abduction of a child possibly headed this way.

7:36 p.m., Grand Marais: Parking complaint about a van that’s parked on Highway 61 near Harbor Inn for weeks at a time, with a “For Sale” sign in the back window. A deputy explained that there is no law against it.

11:18 p.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about loud rooftop music coming from the Raven’s.

Saturday, July 10

2:06 a.m., Grand Marais: Four citations issued for minor consumption after deputies responded to a juvenile party report.

8:18 a.m., Grand Marais: Parking lot complaint behind GunFlint Tavern. A truck was blocking the delivery alley.

10:27 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller said there were two children, ages 14 and 8, with a cardboard sign standing along the highway about a half-mile east of Satellite’s. The caller was afraid the kids were runaways.

12:10 p.m., Grand Marais: A Canadian vehicle hit and killed a bear near mile marker 138. The vehicle was not drivable.

5:46 p.m., Hovland: Suspicious activity and trespassing reported at a trailer parked just past Big Bay.

Sunday, July 11

11:58 a.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais man, 23, arrested for 5th degree possession of a controlled substance and smuggling contraband articles into prison.

4:09 p.m., Grand Portage: Deputy requested to remove an unwanted person from a residence.

10:51 p.m., Grand Marais: A man who was kicked out of the Birch returned a few hours later and was trying to start a fight.
