Tuesday, March 22
1:01 a.m. Gunflint Trail LEC: Public Assistance. Phone call popped up on rapid SOS but
didn’t come through on the phone system. Location according to rapid SOS was in the
middle of Lake Superior. Phone number was called to make sure everything was fine.
Party that answered the phone was at a Kwik Trip in Olmstead County. Olmstead County
was contacted to make sure they also received the call.
2:22 p.m. Cascade Beach Road: Theft. Caller reported that some brand new snowshoes
were stolen from their property some time between March 5 and March 10. The suspect
would have had to drive down the driveway and get out of the car to take them because
they were leaning against the house. There were two pairs: 1) large size and aluminum, and
2) small, red, and metal. They were Tubbs brand with a combined value of $500. Nothing
else was missing. Shovels and rakes were in plain sight, undisturbed. Report will follow.
6:07 p.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue West, Assist another agency. Arrangements were
being made to transport a patient to Duluth when the patient pulled out their IV and left
the hospital on foot. They just wanted to go home. They were located in the clinic entryway sitting with other people. The patient found someone to pick them up and take them
home. This was a welfare check as the concern was for the safety of the patient, especially if
they tried to leave on foot again in the harsh weather.
Wednesday, March 23
9:38 a.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue East, Public Assistance. Caller reported that snow
from across the avenue was being pushed onto her property and killing the trees. Caller
was advised to speak with the plow truck driver as this was not considered a criminal
matter.
1:00 p.m. East Highway 61: Animal in distress. Caller reported that an injured deer was in
her backyard and she was unable to contact a Conservation Officer. She was given another
phone number to contact a CO.
Thursday, March 24
5:33 p.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue East, Fraud/Scam/ID. Woman received a call from
“Homeland Security” and she gave them her social security number. The caller than stated
that the woman had just helped two people enter the United States. Woman was given
the website for Federal Trade commission identity theft: identitytheft.gov and the Social
Security Administration fraud department: oig.ssa.gov/scam-awareness/report-the-scam
The woman said her daughter would be able to help her fill out reports with the FTC and
SSA. She was advised to contact her bank and credit card company to let them know what
happened so they could watch for suspicious activity on her accounts.
Friday, March 25
8:08 a.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue West, Vehicle vandalism. Caller reported that her
vehicle was damaged last night. Someone scraped up the front and side windows with a
screw driver or something sharp. It happened last night. No known suspects. the vehicle
was parked on the street last night. Investigation determined that $2500 worth of damage
was done to the vehicle. No other vandalism was observed in the neighborhood.
11:50 a.m. Fraud/Scam/ID Theft situation. Caller reported that a man was trying to collect
$9500 in cash so that he could get his grandson out of jail. Caller requested that a Deputy
speak to the man and explain that this was a fraud situation. The man was convinced and
did not send the money.
7:39 p.m. thru 9:20 p.m. County-wide power outages were reported. Wires were down on
Mile Creek Road; there was sparking and possibly a grass fire. Winds were strong everywhere, trees were down everywhere. Arrowhead Electric Cooperative reported that power
was restored to everyone by early morning.
Saturday, March 26
5:39 a.m. East Highway 61: Damage to Property. The Border Patrol station east of Grand
Marais had been vandalized with broken windows and slashed tires on multiple vehicles.
It appears that someone attempted to gain entry into the office building. Investigation
ongoing.
Sunday, March 27
8:20p.m. West Highway 61: Structure Fire. Roof fire that seemed to get started because of
a chimney fire. Everyone was safely out of the building. Fire scene was cleared in about an
hour.
