Cook County Law Enforcement briefs


It is the policy of the Cook County News-Herald to withhold the identities of individuals in Cook County Law Enforcement briefs. When court proceedings are complete, the Cook County News- Herald publishes a complete accounting of names and penalties in its Matters of Record.

Wednesday, March 2

6:53 a.m. West Highway 61: Public Assistance. Caller was concerned that they might have a hernia and needed the phone number for a medical center in Duluth. Dispatch found the number and advised the caller that they would have to listen to the recorded message carefully so that the correct button was hit to talk to a nurse.

12:45 p.m. Gunflint Trail LEC: Public Assistance. Caller requested the Civil Division. Dispatch asked them if they were looking for Cook County, Minnesota, or Cook County, Illinois. Caller was looking for Illinois, so Dispatched gave them a phone number to call.

Thursday, March 3

8:39 a.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue West, Public Assistance. Caller reported that a helicopter was coming in and one vehicle in the parking lot had to move. License plate info was used to determine who owned the vehicle. Owner worked at the hospital and was contacted.

8:33 p.m. West Highway 61: Snowmobile on fire. Outside a lodge, out back by parking, a snowmobile was fully engulfed in flames and was parked near two other snowmobiles. Five minutes later, a second snowmobile was on fire. When the owner of the sled that was the source of the fire was interviewed, he thought it might have been an electrical fire. He said his hand warmers stopped working when he was riding tonight. The first sled was destroyed by the fire, the second sled was melted on its right side.

Monday, March 6

4:20 p.m. Sugar Loaf Cove: Rescue. Eight-year-old boy slid down ice from an icy trail and landed near the water. The boy had slid down 20-40 feet. The rocks were completely ice covered. First Responders used ropes to climb down and secure the boy. Boy was brought up and reunited with his mother. Responders were able to climb back out as well. No medical attention was needed.

Tuesday, March 7

7:18 a.m. Taconite Harbor parking area: West Highway 61, Theft. A snowmobile trailer was left in the parking area overnight and it was broken into. It was an enclosed 18-foot Alum trailer. Doors were forced open, all the tools were gone, tail-lights broken, tires slashed and punctured. Investigation is ongoing.
