It is the policy of the Cook County News-Herald to withhold the identities of individuals in Cook County Law Enforcement briefs. When court proceedings are complete, the Cook County News- Herald publishes a complete accounting of names and penalties in its Matters of Record.

Tuesday, February 8

2:51 a.m. Gunflint Trail LEC: Public Assistance. Man called to say that he was stuck on a New York interstate highway and did not feel safe. Cook County Dispatch advised him that he had reached Minnesota and recommended that he stay on the line while he was transferred to a New York office for help.

7:43 a.m. Grand Marais: West Fifth Street traffic detail, Officer initiated. School zone was patrolled. One speeding infraction was observed.

10:07 a.m. North Bigsby Road: Rescue. Man called and said he was hiking, not feeling well, thought he might be dehydrated. He felt dizzy and nauseated. He had been hiking for about an hour. Dispatch kept the man on the line while search and rescue responded. Cell phone contact ended abruptly 50 minutes later; party either hung up or phone battery died. Fifteen minutes later, first responders were on scene with the man, assessing the situation. About 45 minutes later, scene was cleared.

5:17 p.m. East Highway 61: Public Assistance. Caller reported that she mailed something to her grandson but put the wrong PO Box number on the package. The package was mailed to PO Box 372 and the owner of that PO box had picked up the package. Caller wondered if the sheriff could help get the package back. The woman was referred to the Missing Mail Service provided by the US Post Office.

Saturday, February 12

1:42 a.m. West Highway 61: Public Assistance. Caller just returned from a trip and found a notice from the Grand Marais PUC on his door. The PUC would be turning off his power due to non-payment. Caller insisted that he did pay and had proof of payment, but he was worried that the PUC would shut off his power this weekend. Investigation determined that a shut-off date was written on the form and the power would not be shut off this weekend. Caller planned to contact the PUC on Monday.

7:04 a.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue West, Public Assistance. A patient was being transferred to the cities and could not take a seven-month-old puppy along. Arrowhead Animal Rescue was contacted.

11:29 a.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Medical Assistance. A 46-year-old male was conscious and breathing. He had hit his head on a tree. His helmet was cracked and he was experiencing neck and back pain. Lake View Two Harbors provided transport to Cook County North Shore Health.

Sunday, February 13

10:21 a.m. Caribou Trail: Theft. Caller reported that the door of the groomer shack showed signs of forced entry. Tools and chainsaws were missing.

1:56 p.m. West Highway 61: Fraud/Scam/ID theft. Caller stated that her father had purchased a used computer and used it to look at news headlines. When he was using it yesterday, a Microsoft message popped up and requested a phone call from him. He called the number and the scammers took control of his computer plus they convinced the man to share important financial information with them. Investigation is ongoing.

Monday, February 14

11:23 a.m. Grand Marais: South Broadway, Motor Vehicle Accident with Property Damage. A County Highway Department plow was clearing the streets. The side plow was not raised high enough to pass a legally parked vehicle and caused over $1000 in damage. Report and photos documented the incident.
