It is the policy of the Cook County News-Herald to withhold the identities of individuals in Cook County Law Enforcement briefs. When court proceedings are complete, the Cook County News-Herald publishes a complete accounting of names and penalties in its Matters of Record.

Wednesday, January 12

10:25 a.m. West Highway 61: Public assistance. Person called to report that a local business phone had been hacked, hi-jacked, because every time the number was called, you get a recording. No one ever answers the phone. Dispatch tried the business phone number and discovered it had an automated system that gives you options.

10:55 a.m. Gunflint Trail: School House Road, Animal disturbance. Caller reports that a neighbor has two dogs that harass people in the neighborhood and the dogs also harass delivery people trying to do their job. Caller was concerned that the two dogs seem to be widening their roaming area and that the dogs could become more aggressive.

3:35 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Damage to Vehicle. Caller stated that he had surveillance video of two people messing with his parked car. They pounded on the windows and now one window doesn’t work properly, and they messed with the charge port, and possibly with the automatic mirrors. The vehicle did not belong to the caller; it was a rental.

Thursday, January 13

12:50 p.m. Grand Marais: South Broadway, informational. Two people were going swimming in the harbor.

1:44 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Theft reported. Caller stated that his snowboard was stolen today around 1 p.m. The board was sitting at the resort outside and someone took it. The snow board was purchased for $500 in 2017. Ride Mode: Kink, top is orange, bottom fluorescent yellow. Current value around $300.

Friday, January 14

11:38 a.m. Lutsen: Hall Road, Fraud/Scam/ID attempted theft. Caller reported that she received a text message a couple days ago from “Norton Total Protection”. The message was about her payment of $230. Caller does not have Norton Protection. She did click on the link and was told someone would be calling her this morning. Caller realized it was a scam. She had been checking an account linked to her phone and there have not been any unusual transactions.

4:03 p.m. East Highway 61: school bus fight. Two female students assaulted each other on the school bus; at least one student was bleeding. Bus was pulled off the road and stopped: fighting girls were kept separated but continued to argue and yell; an ambulance and police were called. Also, a second school bus came to help finish the route for the other students.

Saturday, January 15

9:39 a.m. Menogyn Trail: snowmobile traffic complaint. Several complaint calls from guests and staff at Menogyn concerned a group of three aggressive snowmobile riders encountered last night. The group of snowmobiles seemed to be doing loops between West Bearskin and Hungry Jack Lake throughout the night.

2:08 p.m. West Highway 61: Property lost/found. A staff person at the Tofte General Store reported that a customer found a single ski on the Sawbill Trail and turned it in at the store. It is a Salomon Escape Outback ski.

3:51 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road: Damage to vehicle. Caller had parked in the overflow lot on Lutsen Mountains between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. today. When they returned to their vehicle, they discovered that the back window of their Chevy Equinox was broken.

10:32 p.m. Timberwolf Lane, Neighbor trouble. Caller reported that he and his wife had been riding their snowmobiles up and down the road on Timberwolf Lane. Then a neighbor began to harass them because the neighbor felt that they were driving up his private driveway and trespassing. Since Timberwolf Lane is a private road, these are Civil Matters and may have to be sorted out in court.

Monday, January 17

9:44 a.m. Grand Portage: Upper Road, Fraud/Scam/ ID attempt. Caller reported that he had received a call where they said he was a good customer, and they were going to pay his bill this month. Caller hung up on them.

1:44 p.m. Property lost/found. Two snowmobilers dropped off a wallet at the LEC. They had found the wallet on the state snowmobile trail. It contained a driver’s license, credit cards, and $13 in cash. The wallet’s owner was contacted and the wallet was returned to them.

5:48 p.m. West Highway 61: Property lost/found. A condominium owner discovered $1600 was left behind in one of her rental units. She was unable to get hold of the recent renter and had discovered that the renter had a shady past: drugs, assault charges, etc. Since the condo was rented thru AirBnB, the owner decided they might follow their protocol. Otherwise, she would drop the money off at the sheriff ’s office as found property.
