Tuesday, December 7

3:46 a.m. Arrowhead Trail: Public Assistance. Caller had been at a cabin on McFarland Lake with three other adults and one five-year-old child. Caller was trying to hike out and return to civilization because they needed to get back for their job. The other three adults and child remained at the cabin; they were safe and warm. The group was snow bound due to mechanical problems; a plow truck got stuck in the snow and a skid loader ran out of hydraulic fuel. The caller had hiked quite some distance (3-5 miles) but started getting cold and made a fire. A Deputy located and picked up the caller. The County Highway Department was contacted and were able to clear the road to the end of the Arrowhead Trail by early afternoon.

8:59 a.m. Grand Marais: West First Street, Neighbor concerns. Caller said that his neighbor heats their house with an outdoor wood stove and smoke from the wood fire enters the caller’s home. This is a problem due to medical issues. Caller was advised to contact Grand Marais Planning and Zoning.

11:35 a.m. Grand Portage: Casino Drive, Shoplifting. Video surveillance revealed that a shopper stuffed candy bars, cookies, and drinks into their backpack, went to the check out, paid for one item, and then left the store. Investigation is ongoing.

Thursday, December 9

11:17 a.m. Stevens Road: Fraud/Scam/ID theft attempt. Caller said he got a message thru WhatsApp saying that he won $35,000. Caller talked to a woman named Clair through a message requesting personal information like his social security number and bank account details. No information was shared. Clair also said that the FBI was watching them. When he tried to call the number again, there was no answer.

Friday, December 10

12:11 p.m. East Highway 61: Animal in distress. Several people were trying to catch and help a tan medium size dog near the highway. The animal appeared to be in rough shape. State Patrol or a Conservation Officer were called to the scene. Investigation determined that it was a coyote with mange and the animal had to be dispatched.

12:43 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Public Assistance. Caller wondered if the sheriff ’s office could help unlock a friend’s car. Caller was referred to the local towing companies and locksmiths.

Saturday, December 11

7:05 p.m. Grand Marais: West Wisconsin Street. Caller reported that a black and white spotted dog was walking around downtown with no one around. Caller was unable to catch the dog but said it was heading north from Sven and Oles. They did not see a collar on the dog. An Officer was able to locate the dog and the Officer thought he knew who owned the dog. When that person was contacted, they said, “Did you find my dog?” Sven and Oles held on to the dog until the animal was reunited with its owner.
