Wednesday, September 15
9:06 a.m. Grand Marais: East Fifth Street, Fraud/Scam/
ID issue. Caller thought that somebody had hacked into
his smart phone because it kept dropping WiFi. Suspected it was hacked through Bluetooth and wondered what
he could do about it. He was advised to change passwords and was given contact information for some local
IT people.
2:51 p.m. Tofte Park Road: Public Assistance. Caller observed what he thought were jets with the US Air Guard
dropping flares and was concerned about fire danger and
vehicle damage. About 1 p.m. this afternoon (near the
Post Office), the caller observed two jets playing cat-andmouse and circling overhead. Then the jets started to
drop flares. Caller was advised to call the Air Guard in
Duluth.
Thursday, September 16
3:04 p.m. Public Assistance. Woman called to find
someone to talk to, she was not in crisis or suicidal, but
she had been homebound for months and was lonely.
Dispatch found some 24/7 toll free phone numbers for
the woman to try and also chatted for a few minutes.
The woman was hoping to adopt a cat in a few days; it
seemed like having a pet could help her feel better.
9:42 p.m. East Highway 61: near the Canadian border.
A truck-with-trailer vehicle accident on the bridge
resulted in some spilled fuel, but no injuries. The truck
and trailer were blocking the bridge. Truck was on the
center cement median with a broken fuel pan. Trailer
was unhooked so it could be moved and traffic could
get past the scene. Forestry offered spill-containers for
the fuel; approximately 30 gallons of fuel leaked. Grand
Portage Fire responded to the scene; the ambulance was
not needed. North Coast towing brought a wrecker and
flat-bed to clear the scene.
Saturday, September 18
11:45 a.m. West End Rescue. A 34-year-old woman had
been hiking for about two miles when she fell, hit her
head, and suffered a possible dislocated shoulder. First
Responder staging was on the north side of the Lutsen
Resort parking lot. Within 30 minutes First Responders
were on the scene to assist the woman. Everyone was out
of the woods about an hour later.
12:48 p.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Ave West, Public Assistance at the hospital. License plate details were requested
for a vehicle that needed to be moved so the helicopter
could land and then take off again.
1:05 p.m. Caribou Trail: Cook County Road 4, Person
lost/found. A man and woman were walking; they separated for a short time and then the man could not find
the woman, age 58. The woman was walking with a black
lab dog, but was carrying no food or water. Verizon
Wireless provided some PING information for the woman’s cell phone, but the coordinates were not valid. The
PING location was somewhere in Lake Superior. About
an hour later, the missing person was located. There had
been a communication problem and the woman headed
in the wrong direction. No medical was needed; all was
well.
7:07 p.m. Grand Marais: East Fifth Street, Neighbor
trouble. A man had an outdoor collection of MREs
(Meals-Ready to Eat) stored in green totes that were attracting bears to the neighborhood. Bears had torn into
all of the packages and enjoyed a feast. There was food
waste all over the yard. The man said he could not clean
up the mess, but he would contact Cook County Human
Services to see if they could arrange a dumpster and help
with the clean-up.
