Wednesday, August 18
1:53 a.m. West Highway 61: Animal Disturbance. Caller
reported that a critter was swimming in their pool and
they were uncertain what to do. They think it might be
a woodchuck. Dispatch suggested that they open up the
outside door and the animal might leave on its own. A
Conservation Officer was contacted.
Thursday, August 19
9:50 a.m. Jackson Lake Road: Informational. Caller wanted to report that they were not home at this time and
to make clear that no effort should be made to evacuate
them or save the property in case of a wildfire incident.
7:25 p.m. West Highway 61 in Grand Marais: Fire call.
Caller reported that she could smell and see smoke coming from the area of the North House Folk School. Upon
arriving at the scene, investigation determined that a
group of people had used the brick oven. DNR staff were
contacted to clarify what is allowed under the current
fire ban. The wood burning brick oven and the wood
burning oven were allowed because they were enclosed
and sparks would be contained in the chimneys. It was
also okay for the charcoal forges to be used in the blacksmithing shop since it is indoors, but no open flames are
allowed.
10:55 p.m. Mink Lake Road: Disturbance. Caller reported that they heard a loud angry argument on Trout Lake
Road. People were yelling at each other about divorce
and ruining each other’s lives. Caller heard a vehicle peel
out; they could hear them drive off. They were concerned
that one of the two angry people might be left behind
and walking around the area. A Deputy drove from
County Road 14 to Trout Lake Road to the Gunflint Trail
but did not come across a vehicle or a person walking.
Friday, August 20
3:30 p.m. Grand Marais: South Broadway, Suspicious
activity. It was reported that there was a man walking
around the harbor breakwall with a sword. He was not
swinging it around or threatening anyone with it, just
walking around with it. One caller thought this was odd
and out of place and creepy. Investigation determined
that the man’s sword was fake (a very flexible piece of
metal) and that it was used for martial arts. The man was
advised that the sword was making people nervous and
he was asked to bring it back to his car and not carry it
around. The man put the sword away.
Saturday, August 21
3:44 p.m. Water emergency on Brule Lake. Female
canoeist had capsized on Brule Lake. She made it to an
island and was on shore with her yellow canoe. First
Responders put a boat in the water and with one EMT,
made contact with the woman. They brought her to her
campsite. All campers were advised about the BWCAW
closure and the fire danger. Scene was cleared with no
transport.
9:37 p.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue East. Caller reported that two black bears were wandering around the Best
Western area. Bears were just passing through the area,
no harm done.
