Friday, July 23
2:12 p.m. West Highway 61: Public Assistance. Lodge
owner was concerned that a room had been reserved for
four people and then nine people showed up with five
vehicles. They checked out late and the room was destroyed; linens were stolen too. A guest’s charge card was
used to charge an extra fee and the guests are now trying
to contest the charges on the credit card. Owner was
advised that this is likely a civil matter, but the County
Attorney may have the option to prosecute.
Sunday, July 25
9:40 a.m. Gunflint Trail: Informational. RED FLAG
WARNING in effect as of
1 p.m. today. CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON. Low humidity, strong wind gusts, warm temperatures, and abundant
dry fuels are favorable for rapid fire growth this afternoon across northeastern Minnesota. URGENT FIRE
WEATHER MESSAGE. Code Red was sent out.
Tuesday, August 3
5:41 a.m. Grand Portage: Mile Creek Road, hazardous
material. It was reported that a truck backed over a diesel
gas pump. Power was shut down and no leak of fuel was
detected. Driver did not seem to be impaired. Photos
taken, report filed.
9:55 p.m. Grand Marais: Second Avenue West, Hot-rodders. Caller stated that they could here “drag racing” going on right now. A couple of cars have been doing this
for the past several nights. There was really loud revving
of engines and racing of the vehicles down the street.
Wednesday, August 4
8:55 a.m. East Highway 61: Informational. Caller reported that they had confiscated someone’s tent who was
camping at Horse Shoe Bay. Caller left a note and took
the tent because the campers were camping in an illegal
spot.
11:49 a.m. Fall River Road: Livestock loose. Three head
of cattle in the road were spooked when a ditch mower came by. The cattle were scared and moved into the
woods. The owner was contacted and he was able to get
them back to their field.
8:39 p.m. Grand Marais: Gopher Run, Suspicious activity. Caller reported that three vehicles had doors open
this morning (around 5 a.m.) which seemed very odd.
Unknown if food was in the vehicles. Nothing seemed
to be missing, including some expensive items. There
were no claw marks and nothing was taken. Caller was
advised that bears had been in the area a few days ago,
opening car doors and looking for food.
Thursday, August 5
8:09 a.m. Grand Marais: Seventh Avenue East, Animal
disturbance. Doors found open on a vehicle. Looked
like it was clawed open by a bear. The console was torn
and there was slobber everywhere. Food and candy were
missing from the vehicle.
2:14 p.m. South Clearwater Road: Fraud/Scam, theft.
Caller had a $50 VISA gift card that they had used at
two local grocery stores. When they tried to spend the
remaining balance on the card the next day, it was out of
money. Investigation determined that the gift card was
compromised and the remaining balance of $19.53 was
spent on bit coin. The VISA card issuer refunded the
$19.53 balance to the caller.
4:40 p.m. Informational. A bird got into a commercial
building and triggered the motion detector security
system alarms. The alarm was turned off for the night
because they could not get the bird out of the building.
5:43 p.m. Airport Road: Attempt to locate. Request from
FAA Minneapolis to check the Cook County Airport for
a plane that may have landed, but did not report. The
plane was located at the airport, all was well.
Friday, August 6
8:03 a.m. Gunflint Trail: Golf Course Road, Theft. Golf
Cart #17 was found parked on Fifth Avenue West in
Grand Marais this morning. Keys were left in the cart
and there was no damage. Someone may have taken a joy
ride as a prank. Investigation is ongoing.
1:39 p.m. County Road 56: Vehicle fire. Van caught fire.
It was engulfed in flames. The van was carrying supplies for a group going into the BWCAW. No injuries
reported. Occupants smelled smoke and then saw smoke
coming into the cab near the glove compartment. They
stopped the vehicle and then saw flames coming from
under the hood. They exited. The vehicle was engulfed in
flames shortly after. Fire was managed by first responders
and two adults were given a ride to Flour Lake Campground.
