Tuesday, June 8
2:44 a.m. East end power outage reported. Power out
from Upper Road in Grand Portage, East Highway 61,
Trolls Trail, and Tamarack Trail. About three hours
later, Arrowhead Electric Cooperative called to say that
everything should be up and working again.
5:14 a.m. Gunflint Trail: Animal lost. A yearling moose
that had been coming up to vehicles yesterday and
smelling the windows was found dead in the northbound
lane of the trail. It was not tagged or collared for research
and could not be salvaged for meat.
3:26 p.m. West Highway 61: Animal disturbance. Caller
reported that a big black bear keeps coming onto his
property. The bear weighs 250-300 lbs and it walks
right up onto the deck and looks into the man’s house.
Conservation Officer was contacted.
Friday, June 11
1:16 p.m. Wilderness Rescue. A 72-year-old man suffered
from a dislocated artificial hip and was unable to move.
Gunflint Lodge became the staging area for the first
responders. A Beaver Pilot was contacted for assistance
in transport. The staging area was moved to Larch Lake.
First plan was to land at the Devil Track public landing,
but weather was a problem, so transport was from
Gunflint Lodge with ambulance. Man was brought to
North Shore Health in Grand Marais.
Saturday, June 12
3:08 p.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue West, checked
welfare of animal. Caller was concerned about a dog
that was inside a car with windows open just a little
bit. Deputy’s vehicle said outdoor temperature was 85
degrees. But inside the car, thermometer held inside the
vehicle registered almost 106 degrees. Dog did not seem
to be distressed. Owner was located. He said a friend had
come by twice today to walk the dog and give her water.
He promised not to do this again and thanked everyone
for looking after his dog.
Sunday, June 13
10:24 p.m. SOS spot message was received concerning
missing person off of the Sawbill Trail. A 64-year-old
man had been missing from a camping area since around
noon today. A boat was launched and landed to make
contact with the reporting parties. The Search and Rescue
helicopter was not available until morning light. Tracking
dogs were recruited for the search. First responders
with the boat were able to locate the lost man the next
morning. He had gone looking for firewood, slipped on
some moss-covered rocks, face-planted, and woke up
disoriented. The man spent the night on some logs and
woke up in the morning to Cook County Search and
Rescue personnel finding him. He was located about 200
yards away from his campsite.
10:38 a.m. Theft reported. Last Thursday, someone came
into their campground and stole some items. Suspects
were using the next campsite. Value of stolen goods was
$1500. Items included a satellite phone and a DGI Drone
with camera (Maverick PRO). Theft victim was advised
that it is illegal to use a drone in the BWCAW. He said he
brought it along just to use the camera.
