Wednesday, June 2

9:57 a.m. Grand Marais: Fourth Avenue West, check construction site. Caller was concerned about possible overnight pillaging of lumber at a construction site. There were trusses, 2 x 6’s, and other lumber to frame up a new home. Site was added to the Residential Check sheet.

10:10 a.m. Grand Marais: West Highway 61, Suspicious activity. Surveillance camera captured kids vandalizing a parking area. Two suspects dumped a bucket of water and diesel fuel onto the parking lot pavement and then rode their scooters and bikes in it, doing tricks. Suspects were under age 14, so parents were contacted. Business requested that both kids be trespassed from the property for one year, unless accompanied by adults.

11:07 a.m. Grand Marais: West Fifth Street, Suspicious activity. Caller reported that someone was building a wooden platform on city property near the walking trail behind the Sawtooth Ridges apartments. Investigation determined that the platform, a ladder, and a swing were being constructed from trees on the property. Deputy informed the city about the situation.

1:07 p.m. Attempt to locate: Wilderness rescue. Received SOS from a garmin gps device for a 73-year-old male suffering from abdominal pain and severe cramping. Man was unable to move. Location was a Gillis Lake campsite. US Forest Service Beaver plane was available for assistance with transport. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) was picked up by the Beaver at Gunflint Lake to assist with rescue. Man was transported to Devil Track Lake and then taken by ambulance to North Shore Health.

1:40 p.m. West Highway 61: Northshore Commercial Fishing Museum, vandalism. Over the weekend, someone tried to light a wooden planter on fire near the museum. Replacement value of lost planter was $50.

3:14 p.m. Camp Road 20: Suspicious Activity. Woman reported that a drone flew over her property last night and was about 15 to 20 feet away from her face. She was wondering what the legalities are in this kind of situation.

5:14 p.m. The Grade: Grass or Wildfire. A large white pine tree was on fire across the lake. The campground host at site 33 would guide fire personnel to the site. US Forest Service firefighters responded to the fire.

Friday, June 4

3:50 p.m. Grand Marais: Eighth Avenue West, informational. It was reported that two people were swimming in Lake Superior off the west shore of the Rec Park area. The swimmers were towing fluorescent buoys.

Saturday, June 5

7:15 p.m. Wilderness call: Public assistance. Caller was hiking on the Border Route Trail, overlooking South Fowl Lake and heading to the Portage Brook campsite. Caller was wondering if there was water there. Dispatch advised that there should be some water sources along the way. Caller responded with a “thank you,” added that they were doing just fine, and hung up.
