Wednesday, May 19

5:26 p.m. Grand Marais: Eighth Avenue West, Animal disturbance. Complaint about man out with four dogs running off leash, no one was cleaning up dog feces. Caller slipped and fell on some feces, said that it was all over the place near the hiking trail. Deputy investigated and the man with dogs refused to speak to an officer; he was afraid that he might be targeted with some vandalism to his vehicle if someone saw him. Deputy also reprimanded two other parties, both groups had three dogs off leash. Friday, May 21

5:40 a.m. Grand Portage: Upper Road, Hazardous material. A nearby camper called to report that a propane tank behind the fish hatchery building at Hat Point had been spraying out propane gas for a few hours, white frost had formed where it was coming out of the tank. The tank was rolled over onto the release valve, and it could not be shut off. COMO was called. COMO’s boom truck was in Silver Bay so they were not able to respond to the scene until almost four hours later.

12:53 p.m. Lodge Lane: Unknown trouble. Caller stated that there was a ship out on Lake Superior that kept blowing its horn. They believed that the ship Atticus was stuck right off the Lutsen Resort shoreline. Caller had not seen the ship but could hear the horn blasting constantly. The US Coast Guard was contacted and stated that the ship was required to blast the horn every minute when it is foggy.

2:46 p.m. Grand Marais: Artist Point. Caller reported that a woman was walking around topless in the parking area. She was part of a group of “hippies” that were traveling in a large white van. Unable to locate.

4:16 p.m. Grand Portage: Store Road, Damage to property. Caller reported that someone had shot a BB gun or a rock chip through a gallery window during the last three days. There was one bullet hole. No suspects at this time.

Saturday, May 22

10:30 a.m. Coyote Ridge: Trespass situation. A trespasser was placing signs on the property. Property owners were advised to put up a game surveillance camera and consider getting a restraining order. This was an ongoing problem.

11:05 a.m. West Highway 61: Assist another agency. Helicopter service Life Link requested that a Deputy be available to secure an area near the Satelite Cafe. The parking lot was cleared. Medical Transport was facilitated.

4:49 p.m. Grand Marais: Eighth Avenue West, Disturbance. Caller reported that two girls (one older teen and one young adult) were screaming at each other on the bike path. Vulgar names were called out and one girl said she was going to kill herself. Attempts to locate and do a welfare check were unsuccessful. The angry young women could not be found.

8:45 p.m. Grand Marais: West Highway 61, Theft. Two backpacks were stolen from the bench in front of the HOLIDAY station. Suspect’s vehicle traveled westbound on Highway 61. A $500 smartphone was stolen. Video surveillance and tracking devices were used to investigate. Three people were involved in the theft, a female and two males in their twenties. Unable to locate suspects. Ongoing investigation.
