Saturday, March 13
2:35 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Medical assistance
requested. Male, age 26, suffered a lower back injury and
was assisted by the Ski Patrol.
7:52 p.m. Grand Marais: South Broadway, Unknown
trouble. Caller reported that they were standing by
the Coast Guard Station and saw a red/orange flare
over the lake. They thought it looked close and were
confident it was not fireworks. The Coast Guard sent up
a boat (transported on a trailer) to Grand Marais and a
helicopter was coming from Traverse City. Three people
saw the red flare come up over the water around 7:50
p.m. A search was conducted throughout the night and
into the morning. Deputies checked all boat landings
on Lake Superior in Cook County. All were clear. The
helicopter went out again at first daylight and didn’t find
anything.
Sunday, March 14
12:02 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Medical assistance
requested. Male, age 24, suffered from contusions on face
and blood coming from an ear. Transported to North
Shore Health.
9:53 p.m. Bally Creek Road: vandalism reported on Bally
Creek Trail, a freshly groomed cross country ski trail.
A truck drove at least one mile on the ski trail to access
another road and damaged the trail. The truck had to go
around a snow berm to drive onto the trail.
Tuesday, March 16
9:34 a.m. Grand Marais: West Highway 61, Parking
complaint. An excavator had been parked on private
property for about a week and the property owner
requested that it be removed. The equipment owner was
contacted and reported that MnDOT had been granted
a 50 ft easement on the property because of the Highway
61 construction project. So, it is legal for the equipment
to park there while the construction project is going on.
10:51 a.m. Pincushion Drive: vandalism. Graffiti was
discovered on the outhouse at the Pincushion overlook.
4:32 p.m. County Road 7: Possible sighting of the
missing dog Rowdy. A yellow lab dog was seen by the
garbage can on the caller’s property. The dog barked at
the caller and then ran off into the woods.
Wednesday, March 17
8:11 a.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue West, Fraud/Scam/
ID theft. Caller reported that the fraud was committed
over the phone with a text message. The message
referenced a UPS package and requested $2.20. Caller
gave them credit card information, but realized it was a
scam when their social security number was required.
Caller had credit card blocked and did not give out their
social security number.
10:41 a.m. Grand Marais: Fourth Avenue West, Animal
lost/found. A black lab dog with a white stripe on
its chest went missing from the RV storage area. The
friendly dog was discovered on Fourth Avenue West and
was tied up in the person’s yard. County Dispatch helped
connect the dog’s owner to the person with the dog. Dog
and owner were reunited.
7:09 p.m. Greenwood Lake area wildfire. About halfway
up the Greenwood Lake Road, a fire was reported on
a pile of logs. Looking to the north, there were open
flames. Investigation determined that there was plenty of
snow around the area and the fire was expected to burn
itself out.
Friday, March 19
7:13 p.m. Honeymoon Trail: Vehicle was stuck in a
snowy ditch on the Honeymoon Trail near the Poplar
River campsites and the tower. Vehicle was stuck about
20 yards past the road into the tower. The driver was
trying to turn around when they got stuck. Towing
company was contacted and a Deputy was on scene.
Between shoveling and pushing, the Dodge Dart was
unstuck, turned around, and escorted back to the Sawbill
Trail. Tow service was cancelled.
Sunday, March 21
1:12 p.m. County Road 14: Structure fire. A woman
was burning a small pile of papers in an old oil drum
next to a building. When she finished, she thought the
fire was out, but a neighbor came over about an hour
later and advised her to call the fire department because
there were flames on the building. The fire burned the
entire building down, destroyed an adjacent vehicle,
and scorched some nearby trees and brush. No flames
reached the home on the property.
