Wednesday, February 17
2:20 a.m. Gunflint Trail: Welfare check. Man was found
sleeping in his vehicle. He was waiting while his vehicle
charged up another vehicle’s battery.
7:15 a.m. Grand Marais: South Broadway, parking
complaint. Someone was camping out at Artist Point.
It was a truck with a camper on it and a big heater
was running. Person was given a verbal warning for
camping in a no camping area.
9:54 a.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Damage to vehicle.
Caller reported that sometime last night, the driver’s
side window of their parked vehicle was smashed
in. Nothing was missing, just glass everywhere. No
suspects.
11:27 a.m. Gunflint Trail: LEC, Fraud/Scam/ID
reported. Person brought in a fraudulent letter that he
received. The letter offered him a share of a 9.2 million
dollar inheritance. The man did not share any personal
or financial information with the suspect, he just wanted
to report receipt of the letter.
1:42 p.m. Lutsen, Caribou Trail: Two large horses (one
brown and one black) were heading down the Caribou
Trail. The horses were reunited with their owners.
2:18 p.m. Old Gunflint Trail: Accident involving two
snowmobiles, drivers sustained minor injuries. Male,
age 51, sustained leg injury; the other person sustained a
chest injury after being thrown from their sled. Injuries
did not require transport. The accident resulted from a
side-by-side impact. Drivers got to the end of the road
where there was a large snowbank. One sled went over
the bank, the other sled went around the bank. One
sled landed on the other and both sleds crashed into
a tree. Snow track was needed to haul out both of the
snowmobiles.
Thursday, February 18
1:25 a.m West Highway 61: Animal lost forever. Eight
days ago, Jack the Husky dog ran away from his owner
and would not return when called. They had stopped
at Tettegouche State Park. Jack the two year old male
husky dog was found dead on the highway the next
morning.
6:38 a.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue West, Animal
Disturbance. Caller reported that there were two
coyotes running loose near his house. They were not
aggressive, just wandering around. Caller was advised
to leave the animals alone and to make a loud noise to
scare them away if needed.
12:57 p.m. Grand Marais: Third Avenue East, Animal
Disturbance. Caller reported that she saw a coyote
running nearby that had no fur on its tail.
Friday, February 19
3:24 p.m. Needham Road, Animal lost/found. Caller
found a dog in her yard, it seemed like a sled dog with
a harness and a collar. Tuff was the name on the dog’s
tags. Dispatch contacted the phone number from the
tags and left a message for the owner. Owner and dog
were reunited.
3:39 p.m. Grand Marais: South Broadway, Rescue call.
Two people were swimming in the East Bay, south and
west of Artist Point. Investigation determined that
both swimmers were in dry suits and were just out for
a winter swim. Parties were advised that the next time
they go for a swim in Lake Superior in February, they
should notify the sheriff ’s office so that emergency
resources are not wasted.
