It is the policy of the Cook County News-Herald to withhold the identities of individuals in Cook County Law Enforcement briefs. When court proceedings are complete, the Cook County News-Herald publishes a complete accounting of names and penalties in its Matters of Record.

Tuesday, January 12
4:27 p.m. Grand Marais: North Broadway, Fraud/Scam
reported. Family members are concerned about an
older family member who seems to be giving money
out and purchasing gift cards for a con artist or scam
organization online. This seems to have started last
summer and the total amount of money lost may exceed
$10,000. Evidence was collected and county human
services (PHHS) was contacted.
Wednesday, January 13
5:06 p.m. Pincushion Drive: Property lost/found. Person
dropped off some keys at the LEC that were found in
the middle of the Pincushion parking lot. The keys were
from a Lexus, so parking lot was checked for that type of
vehicle; no Lexus in parking lot. 9:00 p.m. the next day,
person called LEC, identified lost items, and picked up
the keys.
Thursday, January 14
1:39 p.m. Grand Marais Harbor: welfare check. A couple
of swimmers were out in the harbor. They were wearing
wet or dry suits. Didn’t appear to be surfing because no
boards were seen, but water had waves. Apparently just
winter swimming, no signs of distress.
Friday, January 15
7:42 a.m. Greenwood Lake: Theft. Caller reported that
two Browning trail cameras were stolen with solar
battery packs. Valued at $500. Investigation ongoing.
10:41 a.m. Lutsen: Jonvick Creek Drive, Fraud/Scam/Id.
Person received call stating that her granddaughter was
in jail and needed her help. Person hung up on caller, did
not give out any personal or financial information.
2:26 p.m. Gunflint Trail: LEC, public assistance. Man
called because he received paperwork and a VISA debit
card in the mail that claimed to be his economic stimulus
(COVID-19) payment and wasn’t sure if it was legitimate.
The IRS site was checked and that is how the payments
will be coming to people who are not set up for direct
deposit. Paper checks may also be issued. The cards are
called the Economic Impact Payment card and are issued
by the US Treasury’s financial agent, MetaBank N.A.
Saturday, January 16
12:02 p.m. Devil Track Lake: South Shore Drive, Animal
disturbance. Caller reported that there was some kind of
animal in her garage that was growling. The animal was
hiding, so it could not be identified. Conservation Officer
was contacted.
3:24 p.m. Lutsen: Caribou Trail: Animal disturbance.
Caller reported that a dog had been following her for
quite a while during a walk on the Caribou Trail. Dog
was 45-50 pounds, mostly brown with some black and
gray. It had a blue collar with a white stripe. Online
posts of lost dogs did not match this animal. Arrowhead
Animal Rescue was contacted. Turned out dog belonged
to a neighbor and was escorted home.
5:50 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Motor vehicle accident, Property
damage. A motor vehicle rolled over about five miles
south of Gunflint Lake Road in the Loon Lake area. The
roads were very icy from the rain and freezing rain. A
passerby, who happened to be an EMT from Proctor,
assisted the driver. Driver was not injured and was taken
to Gunflint Lodge restaurant. Vehicle was totaled. Road
conditions were so bad that towing was not available
until the next day. Deputy investigated the accident and
gave the driver a ride home to Grand Marais.
