Tuesday, December 29
12:19 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Medical assistance requested. Male, age 57, collided with a tree while skiing, was wearing a helmet. Was lucid and complaining about back and rib pain. Transported to North Shore Health.
2:04 p.m. Gunflint Trail LEC: Fraud/Scam reported. Caller received several threatening texts and photos from someone linked to a Grand Marais phone number. Linking to a Grand Marais phone number may have been part of the scam. Threats included personal details such as family member names. Photos were of dead people. Party is threatening the caller, trying to get them to pay money through a link in the texts. Caller was advised to contact the company that carried the calls (Bandwith.com) and to report the unwanted messages on their website.
2:14 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Snowmobile complaint. Caller reported that six or seven snowmobiles were riding around in the middle of the Gunflint Trail just north of the Gunflint Pines. Snowmobilers were located and advised to find a better place to ride.
5:57 p.m. Grand Marais: West Second Street, Animal complaint. Jack the huskey dog was in the neighbor’s yard again; this is an ongoing problem. Jack’s owner stopped taking calls from the neighbor. Update: On January 3, Jack the huskey dog returned to the neighbor’s yard and was on their deck, teasing the neighbor’s dog. Jack’s owners were contacted and explained that they are considering relocating the dog as they have not been able to control Jack. He bolts out the door and won’t come back to anyone. Neighbor understood and said she would like to work with Jack’s owners on changing the dog’s behavior.
Wednesday, December 30
2:27 p.m. Gunflint Trail LEC: Public assistance requested. Caller was concerned about an incident that occurred a while back in another county. It involved a fight. Caller is now being sued to cover charges and wanted to know what to do. Caller was advised to contact a private attorney.
8:11 p.m. Lund Road: West end structure fire reported. Shed was on fire, about 60 percent burnt. Structure was near a 100 gallon gas tank. There was a propane wall heater in the shed. A dirt bike and four-wheeler were in the structure; no power lines were near the structure. Shed was a total loss. Estimated value was $7500 including structure and contents.

10:59 a.m. Lutsen: Hall Road, Sound of shots fired. Caller reported that they saw a driver in an older truck that appeared to be hunting from the truck. Caller saw a rifle barrel, but didn’t see what was being shot at and did not approach the vehicle. Caller was transferred to MSP to connect with a conservation officer. Investigation determined that a deer was shot off of the Hall Road. There were no tags and the deer was taken away by the truck driver.

2:16 p.m. Grand Marais: South Broadway, Coast Guard Station parking area, Animal disturbance. Saturday afternoon, nine people called to report that a deer had jumped into the Grand Marais harbor and was struggling in the deep cold ice-filled water. The deer survived the night and was floating on a piece of ice in the middle of the harbor on Sunday morning. With Deputy support on shore, DNR staff and Conservation Officers took out a boat and guided the animal back to shore. The deer was last seen running towards the woods on Artist’s Point.
3:26 p.m. West end: Moose Crossing Trail where it meets the Sawbill Trail: Person lost/ found. Male, age 59, did not return from cross country skiing when expected. Family was concerned that man was lost and would be stuck in the woods after dark. Search and Rescue staged at Britton Peak Trailhead. Snowmobiles and skis were used in the search effort. Two hours later, lost male skier had been located, brought out of the woods, and was safe at the trailhead.
