Tuesday, December 8
9:07 a.m. Silver Bay: Property theft. Caller
had not seen their cell phone since they
used it at a rest area in Silver Bay. Caller
contacted their provider and discovered
that someone had been using the phone as
there was 25 GB worth of data used since
the phone went missing. The phone was
disconnected by the provider.
10:44 a.m. Sea Gull Lake Road: Public
assistance. Caller was concerned about
all of the ice skaters on Sea Gull Lake, as
many as 50-100 people at one time. The
lake only froze over last Tuesday and there
has been warmer weather since then. The
caller had seen quite a few people with
babies strapped to their chests plus a lot
of young kids. Caller mentioned that
three people had fallen through the ice
on Clearwater Lake last weekend and was
generally concerned about public safety.
Wednesday, December 9
11:26 a.m. Property lost/found. Person
reported that their snowmobile had
broken down on the Pincushion Trail
system last winter and they had received
permission from the US Forest Service
to leave the sled until they were able to
get it out. At some point during the last
year, the sled was declared abandoned
and another person invested about $720
in labor, parts, and registration fees in
the machine. The bill of sale was from a
previous owner. Parties were advised that
this is a civil issue.
11:47 a.m. Devil Track Lake: Neighbor
complaint about a brush fire. Caller was
concerned about a large brush fire that
his neighbor had started that seemed
to be too close to a pole barn building.
Investigation determined that the fire was
not a danger: it was at least 30 feet away
from the building on the owner’s private
property and surrounded by more than
three inches of snow cover.
3:53 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, Vehicle
vandalized. Vehicle was sprayed with
mustard sauce and a threatening note was
left that promised more damage in the
future. Note also threatened the owner of
the vehicle. Note referred to an incident
that had occurred on Highway 61 near
Two Harbors, but the owner of the vehicle
had not been in that area recently.
Thursday, December 10
9:43 a.m. Informational. About one mile
east of Binagami (Section 21 63 2W),
there were plans to blast beaver dams.
Two or three blasts between 11 a.m. and 1
p.m. were expected.
10:09 p.m. Grand Portage: Child lost/
found. Six year old girl was abandoned
beside Highway 61 by her mother. Two
men driving on the highway stopped to
help the little girl. Human Services and
the police were contacted. The little girl
was given proper care and the mother
was located and arrested for child
endangerment.
Friday, December 11
12:49 p.m. Cascade State Park: People
lost/found. A Toyota Corolla was stuck
on the state trail, just before the split
with Willard Lane and about 3000 feet
south. Two people were in the vehicle; no
injuries reported. They were following
a route on Google Maps to Lookout
Mountain in Cascade State Park. Google
Maps told them that the trail was a road.
Saturday, December 12
3:59 p.m. County Road 7: Vehicle accident
with personal injury. Driver told officer
that he was on his way home to Duluth
from his place up the Gunflint Trail and
he fell asleep while driving. He woke up
when he hit the creek. One person was
transported to North Shore Health. Driver
was issued a citation for careless driving.
9:36 p.m. East Highway 61: Chimney
Fire. Two adults and three dogs left the
residence and remained at the scene.
In time, it seemed like flames stopped
coming out of the chimney. There was
smoldering at the top of the chimney,
but no visible flames. Hovland Fire
Department crew members checked the
scene with the infra-red camera. Scene
was cleared.
