Tuesday, November 17
10:57 a.m. Grand Marais:
West Second Street, Fraud/
Scam/ID reported. Caller
reported that possible
voter fraud occurred
involving a named suspect.
11:41 a.m. West Highway
61: Motor Vehicle Accident
with Property Damage.
Two vehicle accident:
dump truck versus other
vehicle. Other vehicle tried
to pass dump truck and
they hit. No injuries, air
bags did not deploy.
2:58 p.m. East Highway 61:
Animal disturbance. Caller
reported that there was
an injured hawk on the
north side of the highway.
Conservation Officer was
contacted.
6:28 p.m. Welfare check
requested for a friend that
was threatening suicide.
Man was located using
cell phone pings; he was
interviewed and seemed to
be okay.
Wednesday, November 18
7:28 a.m. West Highway
61: Unknown trouble.
Semi-driver was trying
to wave down traffic. The
semi-truck was located
off to the side of the road.
The driver did not need
medical assistance and the
truck was not disabled.
He had locked his keys in
the cab and the truck was
running. A locksmith was
called.
1:20 p.m. Camp 20 Road:
Harassment. A dog musher
was having trouble with
a local driver that would
yell and honk, threatening
the safety of the dog team
on the road as the vehicle
passed the dogs. The
suspect was located and
interviewed. As a former
musher, the driver believed
that it was unsafe and
illegal to run dog teams
on a plowed county road.
The Deputy researched
the issue and determined
that it is legal to run sled
dogs on maintained county
roads and informed the
driver.
Thursday, November 19
11:27 a.m. Croftville Road:
Public assistance. Caller
wanted to know if she
would be fined if she and
a friend wore masks and
walked outside, but did not
stay six feet apart. She was
advised that they would
not be fined.
11:43 a.m. Devil Track
Lake: South Shore Drive,
Theft. Caller explained
that he had been taken
for some fraud regarding
his grandson over the
last couple of days. Caller
had been contacted by
someone claiming to be
his grandson. This person
said he had been arrested
and needed money to
help him out. The caller
followed instructions and
mailed $7000 in $100 bills
to an address in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania The caller
was also told to honor a
“gag” order (keep quiet)
that was in place. The caller
was asked to send $40,000
more, but in the mean
time, he had been able
to contact his grandson
and his grandson didn’t
know anything about this.
A man claiming to be
“Samuel Ross” was part of
this scam and happened
to call when the Deputy
was investigating. After
declaring that he worked
for “God and Jesus”,
Samuel refused to speak
to the Deputy. A detective
with the Pittsburgh Police
was able to assist with
the investigation, but no
suspects were apprehended
or money retrieved.
Friday, November 20
3:40 p.m. Lullaby Creek
Road: Public assistance
requested. Driver of school
bus number two reported
that there was a disabled
vehicle and trailer pulled
off the road. The utility
trailer had a flat tire and
the person at the scene
looked like he might
appreciate some assistance.
Upon investigation, the
vehicle and driver were
gone and the trailer was
pulled off the road, not
blocking the traffic lane.
Saturday, November 21
12:30 a.m. County Road
7: Unknown trouble.
On the open phone line,
Dispatch heard loud voices
with at least three people
arguing and a good deal
of swearing. A man was
yelling and threatening to
break someone’s fingers.
Investigation resulted in
one man and one woman
being transported to a
home in Grand Marais.
7:55 a.m. County Road
7: Parking problem. A
vehicle was parked in the
right-of-way of County
Road 7 and it was blocking
someone’s driveway. The
property owner was unable
to leave their property. So,
the vehicle was removed at
the request of the Sheriff ’s
Office. A local towing
company towed the vehicle
away and billed the vehicle
owner.
9:20 a.m. Suspicious
Activity. On Friday,
October 13, 2020, between
4:00 and 4:30 p.m.,
someone attempted to steal
two tires from the salvage
yard in Tofte.
3:36 p.m. Murmur Creek
Road: Road blocked by
truck. A logging truck
had jack-knifed on the
road with the cab on one
side and the trailer on the
other. Driver was at the
scene and trying to locate a
front-end loader to get the
semi-truck unstuck. They
needed to lift a low-boy
trailer and frame that were
resting on the ground,
perpendicular to Pike Lake
Road. North Coast Towing
assisted. In less than an
hour, the trailer had been
removed; the road was
clear.
