Wednesday, November 4

6:59 a.m. Grand Marais: Neighbor complaint. Caller wanted to know if there was a city ordinance about leaving garbage out in the yard. Their neighbors had trash bags stacked up behind a garage. Due to wind and animal activity, some of the trash ended up in the caller’s yard and had to be picked up. A deputy spoke to the neighbor and the caller was advised to contact City Hall.

Thursday, November 5

7:23 a.m. East Highway 61: Unwanted person. Caller reported that a man was on their private beach and would not leave when he was asked to leave. Investigation determined that land ownership may be public rather than private, so caller was going to talk to the Recorder’s Office about the property ownership.

3:49 p.m. Grand Marais: Fourth Avenue West, Suspicious activity. Caller reported that a car parked nearby (with a light on top of the vehicle) was pretending to use radar. Investigation determined that the vehicle driver was working for MnDOT and the Safe Routes to School program. They were tracking speeds with a handheld radar and laptop computer.

4:35 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Suicide threat. Caller reported that her friend was leaving messages that suggested he wanted to die. The caller’s friend was located and brought in for an evaluation. A doctor determined the man was not a threat to himself or others at this time and he was released. Due to alcohol consumption, his vehicle was parked and secured until the next day. A friend came to pick him up and to stay with him for the night.

Friday, November 6

5:23 p.m. Fall River Road: Theft. Caller reported that three deer stands had gone missing. Last deer hunting season the stands were still there and now they are gone. Estimated value is $500 total.

Saturday, November 7

6:01 a.m. Six Hundred Road: Vehicle accident with fatality reported. The vehicle had been part of a high-speed pursuit by police in Lake County on Friday night. The driver was missing from the accident scene and was later arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. The victim, a 55-year-old man, was a passenger in the truck and was found dead at the scene of the accident. Investigation is ongoing.

2:15 p.m. Grand Marais: West Second Street, Threats. Caller reported that over three days, family members received threatening messages from people at the grocery store, messages on Facebook, and text messages. They were told to go back to where they came from.

2:30 p.m. Casper Hill: Civil matter. A family loaned a truck to a person who they thought was going to return the vehicle on Saturday, November 7. The person did not return the truck because they understood that the truck was given to them. This is a civil matter rather than a criminal one.

6:26 p.m. Grand Marais: West Second Street, Animal disturbance. Caller requested that a stray cat that she had taken into her home be brought to the city pound because she was unable to keep the cat. It was an orange and white male cat. The cat was transported in a carrier and Arrowhead Rescue was notified.

Monday, November 9

8:58 a.m. Grand Marais: Third Avenue West, Theft reported. An Evinrude 15 hp short staff boat motor with whale fins was stolen from a boat parked in the back by the alley.
