Tuesday, September 29
3:06 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Civil Matter. A lodge and
boat rental customer called
to complain that they had
been over-charged on their
credit card for service
provided in June. The
customer was repaid the
over-charge amount when
it was requested, but he felt
that the business had tried
to take advantage of him
and worried that he might
not be the only victim. The
man was advised that this
appeared to be a civil issue.
7:22 p.m. East Highway
61: Civil Matter. Landlord
wanted to speak to a
deputy about a tenant that
was causing some issues
with the neighborhood
and possibly with their
roommates. Landlord
was advised that this is a
civil matter, rather than a
criminal one.
Wednesday, September 30
3:42 p.m. Chicago Bay
Road: Fraud/Scam
reported. A man received a
phone call claiming that his
social security number was
suspended and directing
him to press one to speak
with someone about it. He
did not press one; he hung
up the phone. He was given
contact information to
report the incident to the
Federal Trade Commission.
3:48 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Welfare check requested
for possible suicide threat.
Family reported that a
52 year old male went to
work this morning, did
not return home, and sent
suicidal notes to his wife,
kids, and parents. “I’m
sorry, its not your fault.”
was the message sent to
everyone. The man had
a history of visits and
guiding in the BWCAW.
Attempts to locate the
individual indicated that he
was not in Cook County.
5:54 p.m. East Highway 61:
Public assistance. Person
called because they just
wanted to talk to someone.
Dispatch gave them the
number for the friendship
line: 1-800-971-0016.
Thursday, October 1
1:56 a.m. West Highway
61: Animal disturbance. A
mother bear and two cubs
were on the porch and also
getting into a dumpster.
Fifteen minutes later, the
bears had moved on into
the woods on the east end
of the property.
3:12 p.m. East Highway 61:
Theft reported. A person
moving out of their house
reported that some items
went missing: fishing
poles, clock, box of kitchen
supplies, an ax. A suspect
was named, located and
interviewed. Suspect was
cooperative and did not
have any of the stolen
items.
Friday, October 2
7:25 p.m. Fall River Road:
Livestock lost/found. Seven
calves (six black and one
brown) went missing.
Family members were
recruited to help look for
the animals. Normally, the
calves would have come
in to feed and be with

their mamas by this time.
A deputy monitored the
highway and west side of
town to help prevent any
accidents. Animals were
located and directed back
toward the farm. All the
cows made it safely back
home.
9:19 p.m. Miscellaneous
fire call. It was reported
that someone lit a fire in
the bucket of an excavator
and then drove away while
the fire burned. The fire
was extinguished; the
suspect and their vehicle
were not located. Garbage
was burned in the bucket
of a CAT excavator parked
on Homestead Road. There
were no identifying items
in the garbage.
Saturday, October 3
2:42 p.m. Clearwater Road:
Personal injury accident.
Two miles up the road
from Golden Eagle Lodge,
a vehicle rolled. The vehicle
left the road on a curve,
was down an embankment
about twenty feet and
leaning against trees. Three
people were in the vehicle;
all three were standing and
walking. All three were
assessed and seemed to
be okay. Harriet Quarles
provided transportation
for them from the crash
scene to a motel in Tofte.
A towing service retrieved
the vehicle.
Sunday, October 4
7:42 a.m. Grand Marais:
West Fifth Street, Theft
reported. A woman
accused her ex-boyfriend
of stealing $16,000 from
her; it was her tip money
from working at a local
restaurant this summer.
The man was located, but
not the money.
11:23 a.m. Grand Marais:
South Broadway, property
lost/found. Caller
reported that they found
a stainless steel multi-tool
near the Coast Guard
Station building. Call Law
Enforcement if you are
missing this tool.
2:52 p.m. Lake Superior:
Water emergency. Four
kayakers were paddling
to Grand Portage from
Isle Royale. They got 6-7
miles out from Isle Royale
and were having trouble,
so they hit a spot device
to call for help. They were
paddling through four
to eight foot high waves.
Weather was holding
them off and at least one
person was experiencing
hypothermia. First
Responders included
Grand Portage crews,
Cook County deputies,
and the National Park
Service. A National Park
Service vessel picked up all
four parties and brought
them to Grand Portage.
No medical transport was
needed.
3:35 p.m. Grand Marais:
East Fifth Street, Theft
reported. Person said
that a crucifix was stolen
off of their door frame,
near where you ring the
doorbell. It was screwed
to the door frame and
was put up in 1977; it had
been there for 43 years. No
suspects were named.
