Wednesday, September 9
8:20 a.m. Flute Reed Road: Fraud/scam on telephone.
Man received a call from overseas that said he won
free money. Man refused to give out any personal
information. The caller then threatened to kill the man
by kneeling on his neck. Other people have gotten
similar calls.
1:02 p.m. County Road 92, quarter mile past the public
access to Poplar Lake. Dead bear carcass abandoned in
the ditch. Conservation Officer contacted.
3:59 p.m. County Road 14: medical assistance requested.
Fourteen year old boy was practicing dirt bike riding
jumps on a private track when he landed wrong. He
landed on his side and may have injured his hip or pelvis.
He was with friends and family, was wearing a helmet
plus all the proper riding gear. Transported to North
Shore Health.
5:04 p.m. Grand Portage: Marina Road, water emergency.
Boat in distress due to strong winds moving it off course.
Boat had a sail, but no motor. Radio communication was
not clear. Search began at Hat Point, but distressed boat
was near Pigeon Point by the Reservation River. Coast
Guard responded. Grand Portage Fisheries ended up
towing the distressed boat back to the Grand Portage
Marina.
6:32 p.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue West: animal
disturbance. A black bear was seen behind the fire hall
area and heading into the woods.
Friday, September 11
1:38 a.m. East Highway 61: public assistance. Person was
looking for the crisis hotline number. They were feeling
lonely and depressed, and experiencing chronic pain.
They were very frustrated that their housing situation
did not allow for companion pets. Dispatcher gave them
support phone numbers and asked the person to call
back if needed.
6:57 p.m. Grand Marais: West Highway 61, disturbance.
Outdoor restaurant patrons were annoyed by the
honking and shouting they heard coming from the
highway and a nearby group of protesters.
Saturday, September 12
4:30 p.m. Grand Marais: Second Avenue East, animal
disturbance. A mother bear and three cubs were in
the neighborhood. Callers were reminded to leave the
animals alone, give them space, scare them if you can
and make sure trash, compost, bird seed, dirty cooking
grills, and other tempting treats are not available to them.
As long as the bears don’t show any signs of aggression,
they are not a problem and will eventually just move on.
One caller remembered the tragedy a couple years ago,
when a bear cub made its way downtown and ended up
drowning in Lake Superior because it was frightened by
all the people following it. No one wants that to happen
again.
8:56 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Lost hiker. One hiker from a
group of three got separated from the other hikers. He
was leading the group and was about a quarter mile
ahead of them when he came to a fork in the trail.
The fork took him to Crab Lake instead of continuing
on the Border Trail. The group tried to reunite but
never connected again. Search and Rescue were out at
Magnetic Lake Trailhead, Daniel Lake, and Caribou
Rock Trail the first evening. The next day, a helicopter
had been requested, but was grounded due to weather.
USFS Beaver plane was available to search from the sky.
The area that needed to be searched included the north
side of Duncan, stairway route to Rose and South Rose.
Contact was made with the missing hiker west of the
Daniel Lake spur; hiker was okay. Hikers were all safe
and were reunited.
Sunday, September 13
10:50 a.m. Grand Marais: Eighth Avenue West, theft. A
stainless steel boat propeller was stolen, valued at $500.
There was no damage to the boat or any other suspicious
activity. No suspects at this time.
