Tuesday, September 1
9:35 a.m. Grand Marais:
West Fifth Street, animal
disturbance. Caller said
a bear had been hanging
around his property last
night. Later, he heard gun
shots and wanted to know
if the bear had been put
down. Dispatch informed
the caller that the bear
would not be visiting his
property anymore.
12:47 p.m. West Highway
61: Suspicious activity.
Caller was creeped out
when they saw a fresh
mound of dirt with a
purple shoe on top.
Investigation determined
that it was a very large
very active ant hill,
approximately two feet in
diameter. Source of shoe
was unknown.
Wednesday, September 2
6:04 a.m. Grand Marais:
East Highway 61, dog
lost and found. A black
lab named “Scooby” was
found wandering around
at the foot of the Gunflint
Trail. Possible owner was
contacted; it was a good
guess, and the family
picked up the dog.
8:57 a.m. Grand Portage:
Mile Creek Road.
Elevator emergency at the
Monument turned out
to be a false alarm. Staff
member hit the alarm
button by accident.
Thursday, September 3
6:08 a.m. Grand Marais:
Seventh Avenue East,
animal disturbance. For the
last few nights, a bear has
been visiting the caller’s
property. Conservation
Officer contacted.
7:39 a.m. Ball Club Road:
Utility problem. A power
line was down, lying across
the road and traffic was
driving over it. The line
came out of a transformer
on residential property.
Power line was removed.
12:07 p.m. Damage to
property. It appeared
that someone took an ax
or hatchet and chopped
away at a power pole.
The damage seemed
intentional.
2:12 p.m. Grand Marais:
harbor breakwall, juvenile
trouble. Five kids were out
at the lighthouse, jumping
off the side. This seemed
unsafe with the weather
conditions. Kids were all
local residents; parents
were contacted.
4:46 p.m. West Highway
61: Trespass issues. Caller
wanted to know what she
could do about people
turning around in her
driveway. Options were to
post legal NO TRESPASS
signs or to tell people to
leave and then, if they
don’t leave, report them as
trespassing.
5:22 p.m. Grand Marais:
North Broadway, animal
disturbance. A bear cub
tried to come in someone’s
front door. Later, people
were trying to photograph
and shoot video of the
small bear. It moved
toward the Best Western
and hid in the bushes by
the Municipal Liquor
Store. Then it headed
back across the highway
and up the hill toward the
HOLIDAY station.
Friday, September 4
2:45 a.m. South Gunflint
Lake: Dangerous animal
disturbance. Bear with two
cubs broke into a house.
Mother bear was able to
get through a utility room
window; her front paws
and head were in the
house. Resident screamed
and yelled until the bear
backed out of the window.
Then the Mother bear went
around to the kitchen area
and tried to find another
way into the house. Mother
bear was not able to get
into the house. Bears
left the area. The broken
window was boarded up
and a Conservation Officer
contacted.
8:34 a.m. Grand Marais:
East Fifth Street, animal
disturbance. Nuisance
bear destroyed bee hives.
Conservation Officer
contacted.
9:35 a.m. Grand Marais:
Fifth Avenue West, damage
to property. Vandalism
occurred last night,
someone plastered mud
everywhere. Naughty
words were written in
the mud in a play area.
Evidence suggested a
known suspect.
2:41 p.m. Wahlstrom
Road: Animal disturbance.
Person riding a scooter
was chased and harassed
by three dogs. Gravel
road made it difficult to
maintain safe control of
the scooter with the dogs
charging alongside. Dog
owners were warned that
the dogs could be written
up as a public nuisance.
Saturday, September 5
3:16 p.m. Menogyn
Trail: Medical assistance
requested. Report of
a group coming from
Duncan Lake to Bearskin
Lake, that included a male,
age 18, with hatchet injury
to knee. Pontoon went out
to meet the group; first
responders were on board
with patient. Hatchet had
hit knee cap with a clean
deep cut. Man transported
to North Shore Health.
Sunday, September 6
12:31 p.m. Vandalism at
Tate Lake boat launch
area. Two vehicles were
vandalized: vulgar words
carved into rear view
windows, windshield
wipers cut, tunnel cover
cut, something was poured
on the vehicle door
handles.
11:40 p.m. Grand Marais:
First Avenue East, Theft
reported. Bike was stolen.
It was a red Cannon
Dale 8-speed road bike.
Happened today between
6:15 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Road bike was valued at
$300 to $400.
Monday, September 7
4:42 p.m. County Road 7:
Public assistance requested.
Twice a year, cattle have
to cross County Road 7.
Traffic has to be stopped
from both directions
because the property is at
a “blind spot” in the road
and once the cattle start
to cross, they won’t stop.
The cattle were moved
safely across the road, no
problems.
