Tuesday, August 11
3:14 p.m. Good Harbor
Hill: Horses on the run.
Three horses went missing.
They got out of their fenced
area. They have escaped
before and normally go
into the woods for a while.
One horse has black spots,
one horse has brown spots,
and one horse is white.
Thursday, August 13
8:27 a.m. West Highway
61: Eagle disturbance.
Woman was attacked by
an eagle. It was reported
that the eagle actively went
after two people and was
restrained using a chef ’s
jacket. The eagle shredded
the jacket and hitched a
ride onto a semi-truck,
then flew into the woods.
The next day, the bird was
captured 18 miles away
by a wildlife technician
working for the US Forest
Service and taken to
The Duluth Wildwoods
Wildlife Rehab Center. The
eagle was transferred to
the Raptor Center in Saint
Paul.
11:35 a.m. Lutsen: Hall
Road, Damage to property.
Arrowhead Electric
reported that someone is
purposefully damaging
power poles. One pole
was chain-sawed half-way
through and will have to be
replaced at a cost of $2500.
6:28 p.m. Grass Wildfire
reported on south shore
of Snipe Lake in BWCA
across from the western
most campsite on a little
island.
Friday, August 14
12:41 p.m. Walter Road:
Fraud/Scam reported.
Person had received mail
fraud from North Shore
Publishers Service that said
she was due to be renewed
at $42.76 per month. No
money or information was
lost.
Saturday, August 15
9:03 a.m. Grand
Marais: East Highway
61, Suspicious activity
reported. Kids observed
tampering with heavy
equipment and rolling
barrel markers around in
a construction area. KGM
Construction contacted.
10:14 a.m. Cascade Beach
Road: neighbor complaint.
A neighbor had been
shooting red squirrels and
caller wondered if that was
legal since it was a nature
preserve area. The case
was transferred to a state
Conservation Officer.
12:11 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Poplar Lake, child lost/
found. A five year old child
with a life jacket on was
found at a boat landing
area alone. A woman
stayed with the child until
the parents showed up.
Sunday, August 16
6:04 p.m. Grand Marais:
West Second Street,
Neighbor complaint. A
man was racing up and
down the road on a dirt
bike. Man was advised
that the dirt bike was not
insured, not street legal,
and he did not have a
driver’s license. The man
had just purchased the bike
in Duluth this morning.
He was issued a warning.
Tuesday, August 18
8:54 p.m. Grand Marais:
Second Avenue West
Assault. Caller reported
that a guy walked up the
alley, sucker punched him,
and then took off. Suspect
was named.
Wednesday, August 19
1:53 p.m. Grand Marais:
East Fifth Street, theft
reported. Two carved
wooden bears were missing
from the front steps of a
home. Possible suspects
named.
Thursday, August 20
7:35 a.m. Grand Marais:
West Fifth Street damage
to property. Pavilion
vandalized, damage to
roof, damage to plants,
damage to the toddler
playground. Looked like
people had a party there,
evidence of vomit, etc.
Caller requested more
night patrol to help prevent
any more damage.
7:19 p.m. Whippoorwill
Lane: Animal disturbance.
A mama bear and three
cubs have been coming up
on the porch and looking
in the windows. The bears
were not scared off by air
horns or barking dogs. A
state conservation officer
was contacted.
Friday, August 21
12:50 a.m. Gunflint Trail:
Sag Lake, assisted another
agency. Lake County was
investigating a plane crash
and they requested Cook
County send a deputy to
contact family members
of the victim to find out if
the pilot, who died, would
have been alone on the
plane. Family members
were notified and assisted
as needed.
Saturday, August 22
12:15 p.m. County Road
6: Medical assistance
requested. Caller stated
that her husband shot
himself in the lower leg
when he was cleaning
his gun. He didn’t realize
there was a round in
the chamber. He was
transported to North Shore
Health.
3:42 p.m. Grand Marais;
East First Street: property
lost. Caller lost an
envelope containing $4000
somewhere between the
bank and the Co-op.
Sunday, August 23
12:30 p.m. Devil Track
Road: Damage to property.
Mailboxes were damaged
on Devil Track Road. Some
damage seemed to be from
rocks.
1:10 p.m. Pike Lake Road:
Dog lost/found. Dog ran
into the woods. It was
an eleven year old King
Charles Cavalier named
“Charlie” wearing a red
collar. Dog was okay
and found early the next
morning.
