Tuesday, June 30
11:29 p.m. Mink Lake
Road: Suspicious activity
reported. Caller discovered
a man in the woods with
a tent up and the man
seemed to be confused.
Man said he was suppose
to go to Grand Portage
and kayak, but didn’t
have a ride. Man wasn’t
threatening, but caller had
a bad feeling about him.
Deputy located the man
camping in a no-camping
zone. Man didn’t know
where else to go as he was
getting picked up at this
site in a few hours. Man
was allowed to stay and
promised to make different
arrangements next time.
Wednesday, July 1
12:08 a.m. Grand Marais:
East Fifth Street, medical
call. Male, age 45, threw
out his back about three
hours ago. He had been
lying down but it was very
painful. His son would
help him get to the ER. The
man was concerned about
costs, if the ER was open,
and if pain medication
would even be available in
the middle of the night.
11:41 a.m. West Highway
61: Personal injury
accident. Callers reported
that there was a vehicle
flipped on its side in a
ditch. Vehicle hit a deer
and then flipped. Driver
was not hurt and vehicle
was off the road, so
emergency responders
were called back.
12:12 p.m. Grand Marais:
First Avenue East. Juvenile
trouble. Two kids, about
age 12, were riding around
on scooters and throwing
rocks at a building that had
vehicles nearby. The kids
were located, interviewed,
and warned that their
parents would be contacted
next time. No damage was
done.
6:54 p.m. West Highway
61. Caller had questions
about abandoned property.
They were advised that
it was a civil matter and
would have to be handled
in court.
Thursday, July 2
4:19 a.m. Suspicious
activity and unwanted
person reported. Caller
was alone at home by a
lake in the woods and not
use to being alone. Sounds
and sights and imagination
created a frightening
experience for the person.
Motion lights were
triggered, Surveillance
camera footage was
available for review. A
Deputy investigated and
explained what probably
happened to create the
experience. Caller was
reassured and encouraged
to call again if needed.
7:29 a.m. County Road
7: Suspicious activity
reported. People seemed
to be running an illegal
campground with no
sanitation/restroom
facilities and no fire
pits. County Soil and
Water Department were
contacted and stated
they would address these
concerns.
9:46 a.m. West Highway
61: Shot fired into flock
of geese. A kayaker on
Lake Superior reported
that a man came out of
a residence and fired a
shot gun into a flock of
Canadian Geese, at least
one goose was killed.
State game warden was
contacted.
5:17 p.m. Grand Marais:
Broadway, vehicle fire
reported. Camper on top
of a Dodge Ram 1500
pick-up truck was releasing
dark black smoke and
seemed to be on fire. The
fire had started underneath
the fridge in the electrical
system and then moved
to the back of the camper.
One fire extinguisher was
used from the outside
and the owner used his
extinguisher on the inside
of the camper. The fire
was extinguished with no
damage to the vehicle, just
the camper was damaged.
5:27 p.m. High Forest Trail:
Jonvick Creek Road. Male,
age 27, had passed out but
was conscious now, not
feeling very well, condition
was possibly heat related.
He was feeling some
cramping in his chest.
The man was located and
transported to North Shore
Health.
11:04 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Fraud/Scam/ID. A man
showed up at the Law
Enforcement Center
because he did not know
what to do. He had
traveled from another part
of Minnesota to meet an
online girlfriend who told
him to come to Grand
Marais. Over time, the
man had given the woman
over $12,000 and now he
cannot get a hold of her.
Friday, July 3
7:04 a.m. Grand Marais:
Old Shore Road: Property
lost/found. While walking
on the beach, a man found
a black smartphone in a
case. He wanted to drop it
off at the Law Enforcement
Center. Instead, the
Dispatcher had him call
911 on the phone so the
number would be revealed.
The phone owner was
contacted and was able to
pick up the phone from the
man and his wife.
9:35 a.m. Clearwater Road:
Motor vehicle accident.
Accident with injuries
occurred on Clearwater
Road. One vehicle, one
person injured: teenage
female was trapped in
the vehicle and needed
extrication. Life Flight
requested. The girl had
emergency surgery at St.
Mary’s in Duluth. Family
was assisted as needed.
Saturday, July 4
9:59 a.m. Grand Marais:
First Avenue West,
Loud music complaint.
Caller stated that there
was really loud patriotic
music blasting right now.
Dispatch advised that it
could be someone playing
in Harbor Park with a
permit for the holiday.
1:27 p.m. Grand Marais:
West First Street,
Threatening behavior. A
customer became angry
about having to wear a
mask in the store and
was very rude to staff
and other customers. The
angry person was asked
to wait outside while their
items were gathered for
them. While waiting, the
unhappy customer got into
a verbal argument with
another customer because
they were blocking the
door and other people
couldn’t come and go.
The angry customer
was contacted later and
told they were no longer
welcome at this store.
When the angry customer
became defensive, they
were advised to be
thankful they were not
sitting in jail.
Sunday, July 5
10:22 a.m. Lutsen: West
Highway 61, Vehicle in
ditch. Vehicle was on the
frontage road in front of
the Clearview Store. Driver
pulled over too close to
the soft edge of the ditch
and was pulled down
the embankment. The
vehicle’s air dam popped
free from the plastic rivets,
but no other damage
was observed. A good
Samaritan was able to pull
the stuck vehicle out of the
ditch.
