Thursday, June 18
4:09 p.m. West Highway 61: Animal
disturbance. Two dogs running on the
highway: a black lab and a Chihuahua.
Someone (not the owner) pulled over
and was able to leash one dog, but not the
other. Dispatch was able to contact dogs’
owner via the veterinarian tags; owner
was reunited with the dogs.
Friday, June 19
4:37 p.m. Trout Lake Road: Theft
reported. Caller discovered that his boat
motor was stolen. Boat is kept down
by the lake near the ramp, motor was
left on the boat with a transom lock.
Approximate value is $2500. It was a
smaller Mercury motor: six horse, four
stroke, about eight years old. No suspects.
5:04 p.m. Old Shore Road: Disturbance.
Two people wanted to go swimming at
Passion Pit beach and were told it was
private property now and they were
not allowed on the beach. This is a civil
matter and will have to be settled in court.
5:32 p.m. Dog found in ditch six miles
from the Canadian border. Very friendly
Golden retriever with a walking leash
on it was found in the ditch, all muddy
and tangled in brush, appeared to be
about nine months old. Dog was taken
to Animal Advocates due to the length of
time being on the run, first sighting was
five days ago. Dog was picked up from
caller’s location, photo sent to Dispatch to
put on social media, and dog was brought
to Animal Advocates. Owner and dog
were reunited.
Saturday, June 20
11:55 a.m. Beach Hill Drive: Animal
disturbance. Caller reported that a goose
has been running around his yard for
a couple of days. The goose has been
making a big mess in the yard. Caller
has tried to scare it away with a broom,
but no luck. Contact information for the
DNR was given.
Tuesday, June 23
9:58 a.m. East Highway 61: Property
status requested. A large gun safe was
abandoned on a rental property. Property
owner had to establish that the safe had
not been stolen before the company
would share the lock combination. The
serial number of the Centurion Liberty
safe was entered into NCIC and got no
hits. A deputy verified that the safe was
on the property. Notarized documents
were submitted to the company.
Unknown if anything interesting was
found in the safe.
12:06 p.m. Poplar Lake: Voyageurs Point:
Missing person reported. Girl, age 14,
left 2.5 hours ago kayaking and had not
returned. She was probably disoriented
and lost on the lake; she was supposed to
stay in the general area of the cabin. She
had a life jacket and kayaking experience
but was new to Poplar Lake. Multiple first
responders included Search and Rescue
personnel and resort staff. About thirty
minutes later, the girl was located by a
family member a few bays away from the
cabin. First responders verified that the
girl was okay, off the lake, and did not
need medical attention. She had tried to
get to the other side of the lake, but got
lost.
4:06 p.m. West Highway 61: Threats
reported. Caller had sold a truck five
days ago. The transmission in the vehicle
just went out and the buyer was sending
the seller threatening messages: one
mentioned returning the truck and
setting it on fire.
Wednesday, June 24
9:29 a.m. Cascade Beach Road: Fraud/
scam reported. Woman received a call
from someone that wanted her to post a
bail bond for her grandson in the twin
cities. She was told not to tell anyone
about this. Party gave her a badge number
and phone number to verify who he was
and to prove it was not a scam. The call
originated from her ”grandson” and then
was transferred to the police officer for
more information and details about how
to raise bail. The woman did not give any
information or money to the callers. She
was advised to make contact with her
grandson and to report this scam to the
Federal Trade Commission.
5:53 p.m. Grand Marais: Fourth Avenue
West, disturbance. Caller wondered about
city or county drone ordinances. Just
had a drone come onto their property,
hover for a bit and then take off again.
There are no city or county ordinances
about drones. Also checked state statute
regarding UAVs and trespassing, found
nothing on the books.
7:31 p.m. Devil Track Road: Suspicious
activity reported. Truck with man,
woman, and baby was backed down to the
lake on the launch with no trailer, seemed
like they might be dumping something
into the lake. They had a lot of containers
in the back of the truck. Owner of truck
was located and interviewed. Family was
just filling containers with lake water to
water some newly planted grass seed.
Friday, June 26
3:12 p.m. West Highway 61: Medical
assistance requested. 28 year old biker
wearing helmet fell and suffered leg injury
and face injury. Bike was broken too.
Biker was transported to North Shore
Health.
4:43 p.m. Public Assistance. Two and onehalf year old boy hit his head on the rocks
and needed stitches above his eyebrow.
Caller did not need an ambulance
response, but requested directions to the
nearest ER. Dispatcher called the ER to
confirm that they had made it to the ER
in Grand Marais.
Saturday, June 27
6:52 a.m. Grand Marais Rec Park: Eighth
Avenue West, Animal bite. Incident
happened last Wednesday evening. Caller
was walking his little dog “Minnie” in
the Rec Park when a big full size (but
still a puppy) Saint Bernard dog got
excited, rushed at Minnie and bit her
on the left hip. At first, it seemed like
Minnie was okay, but Minnie’s owner was
concerned that the dog’s injury may have
to be addressed with veterinarian care
and thought the attacking dog’s owner
should pay for any medical bills. Contact
information was shared with both
owners. This issue may have to be settled
in Civil Court.
