Tuesday, June 16
8:06 a.m. Grand Marais:
Checked hazard. Advised
that there has been a large
truck/heavy equipment
parked on Highway 61
near Eighth Avenue West
for a couple of days. It is
restricting visibility for
coming out of the Rec Park
onto the highway. MnDOT
project manager was
contacted.
9:10 a.m. Grand
Marais: Fraud/scam
reported. Someone had
used the caller’s social
security number in an
unemployment insurance
scam involving the
hospital. With the caller’s
social security number
attached, the letter stated
that the employer owed
more than $19,000. Caller
was advised to inform the
Social Security Department
and the three credit
bureaus. The incident was
documented.
12:25 p.m. East Highway
61: Public Assistance
requested. Elderly female
was having phone issues,
could not reach her son
in the cities; the calls
had a message that said
they couldn’t be received.
Woman was very frustrated
that dispatch was unable to

tell her how to call her son,
got upset and hung up on
dispatch. Dispatcher tried
one of the numbers that
the woman had shared and
was able to connect with
the son. He promised he
would call his mother.
7:49 p.m. Grand Marais:
Eleventh Avenue West,
loud sound reported.
Caller thought it might be
one shot from a 12 gauge
shotgun, but it turned out
to be fireworks that were lit
off somewhere on the west
end of Second Street.
7:54 p.m. Unwanted
person. Drifter at
someone’s house wouldn’t
leave and started to make
threatening remarks.
Deputy investigated and
requested that detox be
called to see if they had a
bed available. Person was
transported to Duluth for
detox treatment.
8:27 p.m. Tall Timber
Trail: animal lost/found.
Chocolate lab dog found
with navy/green collar, but
no tags. Caller was given
contact information for
Animal Advocates.
8:56 p.m. Evergreen Road:
grass/wildfire. Ten foot
flames maybe 15 foot,
looked like trees were on
fire near the dock. Caller

was sitting in a yard
across the lake when he
heard what sounded like
fireworks and then saw the
fire. It was determined that
the fire was much smaller
than it had appeared and
was permitted.
Wednesday, June 17
9:01 a.m. Carlton Peak:
damage to property,
vandalism. Porta Potty at
the parking lot had graffiti
on it. Photos taken. No
suspects.
11:59 a.m. Peninsula Point
Trail: Damage to property.
Caller reported that
someone stole a structural
pin out of the third level
of his scaffolding. The
scaffolding would have
collapsed if anyone had
gone up there to do work.
No suspects, but caller
believed it may have been
an attempt to harm him.
Wondered if it was related
to the COVID-19 scare.
Believes people don’t
consider him a resident
even though he’s here more
often than anywhere else.
12:27 p.m. Cramer Road:
Trespass and damage
to property. Attempted
break-in reported at ash
cell building on Ash Cell
Road. 480 transfer box
was unscrewed, lots of

vehicle tracks and trails
cut. Incident investigated.
Report filed.
1:44 p.m. Grand Portage:
Store Road, Fraud/scam
reported. Caller received
a phone call stating they
were from the Social
Security Administration
and that US Marshals had
a warrant for the caller due
to activity in Texas. Caller
was advised to contact the
Social Security office to
make sure that his number
was not compromised and
to file a report with the
Federal Trade Commission
at WWW.FTC.GOV to
report a scam call.
6:26 p.m. Mile Creek
Road: Animal disturbance.
Three month old German
Shepard dog was stuck
under a dock. Caller was
able to get the dog out
from under the dock.
7:18 p.m. Cornish Lane:
Suspicious activity
reported. People from
Wisconsin had not been
to their Cook County
property since late April.
When they got back a few
days ago, they noticed a lot
of firewood was gone and
someone had tried to burn
stuff in their stove.
