Tuesday, June 9
12:33 a.m. Devil Track
Road: power outage
reported by seven different
residents. Two hours later,
power was restored.
10:23 a.m. West Highway
61: informational call.
Person called to say that
he drove by where the tree
was blocking the highway
and he noticed the tree’s
stump. Caller has lived
up here a long time and
said it looked like mother
nature took the tree down,
not a person. MnDOT was
contacted and additional
photos were taken for the
investigation.
12:26 p.m. Devil Track
Lake: South Shore Drive,
violation of a harassment
order. Person was cited
for violating a harassment
order after posting
inappropriate messages
on a Facebook page.
Deputy attempted to
contact person, but they
pretended not to be home
and refused to answer their
phone, so citation was left
at their door.
1:05 p.m. Grand Marais:
Fifth Avenue West, truck
accident with personal
injury. Semi-truck
t-boned and a lot of
diesel fuel was leaking.
MnDOT, city, and county
highway departments
were contacted to bring
sand and brooms to
help control fuel flow.
State Patrol contacted to
document the crash as a
commercial motor vehicle
was involved. Semi-truck
driver stayed on scene
until tow service arrived.
1:11 p.m. East Highway
61: Welfare check
requested. Young woman,
age 20, sprained her ankle
on the Superior Hiking
Trail. She did not need an
ambulance, but had called
her dad to pick her up. He
was five hours away, so
family requested that the
woman be contacted as she
was in a no-cell-phoneservice area. Woman was
located and given a ride to
Grand Marais where she
could call her family and
they could call her.
1:21 p.m. East Highway
61: Dog lost/found. Stray
dog picked up on the
highway, four miles east
of Grand Marais. Female,
friendly, bull dog mix,
black gray color with white
and brown face. Animal
Advocates contacted. Dog
was brought to the city
pound. Later, owner called
to report missing dog;
dog’s name was Harper
and she had escaped from
her outdoor kennel area.
When owner went to post
Harper as “missing dog”
on the “Cook County MN
Pets Lost, Found, Escaped”
Facebook page, she found
photos of Harper, who had
gotten a ride to the pound
in a convertible sports car.
Owner and Harper had a
very happy reunion.
Thursday, June 11
11:02 a.m. Stonegate
Road: motor vehicle
accident with property
damage reported.
Neighbors on gator sideby sides crashed, vehicles
were damaged. It was
recommended that drivers
and passengers go to the
hospital to get checked out
for possible injuries.
Friday, June 12
11:45 a.m. Grand Marais:
East Fifth Street, truck
traffic complaint. Trucks
were driving too fast on
Fifth Street past their
detour. The truck detour
had been re-routed
because large trucks were
having trouble making the
turn from Fifth Street to
Fifth Avenue West (the old
Gunflint Trail) and vice
versa. Trucks had been
re-directed to stay on Fifth
Street.
12:34 p.m. Grand Marais:
East Fifth Street, parking
problem. Abandoned
vehicle had been in a
parking lot for three days.
Owner was contacted, said
the car had mechanical
problems and promised
the car would be towed the
next day.
2:14 p.m. Cramer Road:
Animal complaint.
Neighbor’s two dogs have
been a problem for the past
three years. The dogs dig in
their garden and use their
property as a bathroom.
Dog owners have been
approached, but do not
see the dogs’ behavior
as a problem. Options
were discussed and law
enforcement may get
involved if problems with
the dogs continue.
8:42 p.m. Ball Club Road:
public assistance. Camping
site 23 was occupied even
though the Two Island
Campground was posted
as closed. Parties were
located and warned for
trespassing and ordered
to leave, which they did
cooperatively.
Saturday, June 13
8:22 a.m. Cramer Road:
neighbor complaints.
Property line dispute
between neighbors has to
be settled in a civil court
procedure; this is not a
law enforcement issue.
Neighbors are moving
marker stakes and cutting
down trees, insisting that
the property boundaries
are in different positions.
Neighbors were advised
to take the case before a
judge in civil court, and to
stop doing things in the
area of dispute until it has
been settled in court. The
wrong actions might end
up creating an even bigger
problem.
9:26 a.m. Devil Track
Lake: South Shore Drive,
dog lost/found. Caller
reported that they found
an older black lab dog at
their house. Female dog
was wearing a blue collar
with no tags, and was very
friendly. Animal Allies
was contacted, the dog’s
photo was posted on the
“Arrowhead Animal Allies”
Facebook page.
6:50 p.m. Medical
assistance requested from
the Boundary Waters using
a satellite phone from a
campsite on Knife Lake,
the northwest campsite by
Bonnie Lake. The Cook
County Dispatcher took
as much information
as possible from the 45
year old male and then
transferred the case to
Lake County.
9:55 p.m. Grand Marais:
Fourth Avenue East,
personal injury accident.
Vehicle driven by a drunk
driver smashed into
someone’s yard and truck.
Driver was taken into
custody and charged with
DUI, open container and
small amount of marijuana
were also found. Vehicle
was towed to the Law
Enforcement Center.
Sunday, June 14
11:18 a.m. Canine (dog)
Training. Three article
searches were practiced
just outside the agility
field gate in the tall grass:
credit card, metal cap
gun, and shotgun shell.
Gun was placed deeper
from the road. Eddy (the
dog) located all items with
no issues, down alerts
on all three items. Andy
Hayes (a person) hid in
an unknown box among a
group of five boxes. Eddy
used an appropriate search
pattern; Hayes was found
in Box 5. Eddy checked the
boxes in order and alerted
on Box 5. Eddy also did
the catwalk, hurdles, crawl,
and broad jump as part of
his training session.
1:33 p.m. Gunflint
Trail: Public assistance
requested. Man stated he
had been backpacking
and ended up hitchhiking to Grand Marais.
He needed to get to his
vehicle which was parked
near Gunflint Lake. He
had started hiking in the
Otter Lake area, but soon
realized that the trail was
too rugged and his pack
too heavy to complete
the hike safely. Private
and public transportation
options were considered.
Man’s brother offered to
come from the Dakotas
to help him out, but that
wasn’t necessary because
local transportation was
provided.
