Tuesday, May 19
8:38 a.m. Brandon Lane: Welfare
check on neighbor. Noise created by
use of a generator was disturbing the
peace and quiet in the neighborhood.
Concern for the neighbor included
a Deputy checking on their welfare
and making sure that County Human
Services support was available as
needed.
3:20 p.m. Grand Marais: South
Broadway parking problems. Visitor
was advised that she cannot park
by a yellow curb. She was confused
because in Texas, yellow means you
can park and red means no parking.
Minnesota law was clarified and she
moved her vehicle.
Wednesday, May 20
1:55 a.m. Devil Track Road, theft
reported. Person discovered that
automatic withdrawals were being
made from their bank account. The
money was being sent to Verizon
Wireless. The total amount stolen
was $941.69.
10:05 a.m. Old Shore Road: public
assistance requested. Caller was
seeking information on what land
is public on Lake Superior and what
she can do to make sure she isn’t
breaking any rules. Caller was on the
beach and was yelled at by someone
who stated they were a homeowner
and had a 100 year lease on the land
that extends into the water. Caller
asked another person who was on
the beach if they got talked to as well
and they had. The property owner
did not identify themselves. Caller
was advised as to where the state
beach property was located.
10:24 a.m. Grand Marais: Fifth
Avenue West, garbage dumped at the
Recycle Center after hours. Five or
six bags were left at store and other
material left on the recycle side.
Suspect identified on surveillance
cameras. A citation was issued for
unlawful dumping of garbage.
1:51 p.m. Multiple emergency units
responded to report of a canoe with
three people capsizing on Tuscarora
Lake. Two people made it to the
island of Tuscarora Lake and one
person was missing. From the air, the
USFS Beaver plane sighted the two
people on land and the overturned
boat. Drones were also used in the
search and rescue effort. The missing
person was found deceased; the
body was transported to the Medical
Examiner. Family members were
contacted and assisted as needed.
The two survivors were brought to
Tuscarora Lodge and assisted as
needed.
Thursday, May 21
3:25 p.m. Property lost/found
reported from Duluth. Caller found
a bunch of IDs, Social Security card
and permit cards on the ground near
Duluth and they all named a local
person. When contacted, the local
person said that his truck was broken
into a couple weeks ago in Duluth.
That is when his property went
missing.
8:38 p.m. Grand Marais: Fourth
Avenue West, phone fraud/scam
reported. Party called claiming to be
from UPS claiming to have a delivery
for her. They asked if she had been
home earlier in the day when they
had tried to contact her. She stated
yes. The party on the phone then
stated they had a $50 million dollar
check for her that they had to deliver.
They wanted the address she was at
so that it could be delivered. She told
them to keep the check and hung up
on them.
Friday, May 22
8:11 a.m. Grand Marais: Second
Avenue East, political sign question.
Caller was concerned that political
signs were already being displayed in
town and they didn’t think anyone

should have them up yet. Candidate
named on the sign had property
owner’s permission to display the
sign in their yard. For the year 2020,
Minnesota Statute 211B.045 only
allows campaign signs from June 26
thru November 13 when the local
jurisdiction has a sign ordinance.
11:10 a.m. Grand Marais: East Fifth
Street, public assistance requested.
Towing company contacted Law
Enforcement to see if there might
be financial support for someone
who needed a tow, but couldn’t pay
for it. County Human Services was
contacted and funds were available to
help the person.
4:32 p.m. County Road 14:
Suspicious activity. Caller wanted
to report that they had seen an
unfamiliar vehicle head up the
western County Road 14 with front
and back license plates that said
HATE, white plates with no state
named. Deputy was unable to locate
the vehicle.
Saturday, May 23
3:36 p.m. Fraud/scam reported.
Person tried to purchase an ATV
online and the seller demanded
that they pay with EBAY gift cards.
Person purchased the cards and gave
the codes to the seller, but has not
received the ATV. EBAY cards were
worth $2200.
6:07 p.m. East Highway 61:
Suspicious activity on Lake Superior
shoreline. Campfires and groups of
campers were investigated. Some
people were following all the rules
so they could stay and some people
were advised to pack up and leave.
Sunday, May 24
1:36 p.m. Grand Marais: West
Highway 61, dog lost/found. A
small female bulldog, black with
a little white on her chest, wart on
top of her head and bad teeth, sweet
natured and friendly, was found and
brought to the city dog pound. Dog
had no collar, no ID tags. Owner
was located, paid the pound fee,
and picked up the bulldog from the
volunteer Animal Advocate at the
pound.
5:58 p.m. Grand Marais: East Third
Street, medical assistance requested.
Female, age 94, transported to
North Shore Health for circulatory
problems in her leg. Three hours
later, a Deputy was able to give the
elderly woman a ride home.
Monday, May 25
6:40 a.m. Gunflint Trail: illegal
dumping reported. Six bags of
garbage were placed on a dumpster.
No material found in the garbage to
identify the suspect. A surveillance
camera was set up in the dumpster
area for future violations.
Sunday, May 26
12:18 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Public
assistance requested. A disgruntled
employee was going to be dismissed
today. Employee had stated that
they have a gun and the caller
requested that a Deputy be available
to help with the difficult situation.
Employee stayed calm and left with
no problems.
Wednesday, May 27
10:22 a.m. East Highway 61: Property
reported lost. Caller thinks he left a
SAR K2P nine mm 3.8 inch barrel
handgun in the nightstand of a hotel
room he rented about ten days ago.
Hotel staff stated that no handgun
has been found. Firearm serial
number was used to register the gun
as lost.
12:27 p.m. West Highway 61: Welfare
check. A woman was observed sitting
in a kayak by the side of the road. It
turned out that she was just waiting
for her friend to come back; he was
retrieving a kayak mount that fell off
when they were traveling.

Thursday, May 28
8:48 a.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue
West, wild animal complaint. A
black bear, bigger than a dog, came
out of the woods and ran down
Fourth Street. Deputy was unable
to locate the bear. All surrounding
neighborhoods were searched.
11:02 p.m. Grand Marais: Eighth
Avenue West, illegal camping
reported. Party had set up in Rec
Park campsite with entire family,
stated he could not find anywhere for
them to stay. Family was advised that
they must leave in the morning.
Friday, May 29
8:33 a.m. Solberg Lane: dog reported
missing. Orange and white husky, 45
pound male, thin, short hair husky
with collar and tags, went missing
early yesterday evening. Owners
recently moved to the area, so not
sure where the dog might have gone.
Update: Ninety minutes later, the dog
was found in the part of the house
under construction, he never got
outside. Dog was fine, but probably
needed to go outside.
10:43 a.m. Caribou Lake: Peninsula
Point Trail water emergency. Two
canoes were on the lake and one
canoe tipped over. One person in
the water, with a life jacket on, was
swimming toward Peninsula Point.
In spite of very windy conditions,
person was making progress toward
the shore. A First Responder met
swimmer at the shore and helped
determine that they were okay, no
medical transport was needed.
12:26 p.m. Grand Marais and Grand
Portage: Possible criminal sex
conduct reported. Caller said that
five females, ages 16-34, are selling
themselves/sex trafficking with the
help of a local man. The same man
was also accused of bringing Native
girls from Duluth, ages 20s and
30s, to the north shore for an escort
service. Suspects were named.
4:55 p.m. Lutsen: Cascade Beach
Road, theft reported. A solo canoe
(15 feet long), black and tweed,
purchased for a few thousand dollars
in 2003, was stolen. It was chained
to a tree on the property with a
second canoe. The chain was cut and
the other canoe was not taken. No
suspect was named.
Saturday, May 30
2:56 p.m. Grand Marais: West Fifth
Street, graduation parade detail. 2020
Cook County High School graduates
had a parade through town with each
graduate riding in a vehicle with
family members. It was a great event.
3:26 p.m. Grand Marais: Eighth
Avenue West. Caller reported that
his wife was walking a dog in the Rec
Park yesterday and a tourist started
to follow her and then yelled at her
because she wouldn’t let his kid pet
her puppy. He also yelled at her
because she had a face mask on and
he insisted that the virus wasn’t real.
This all made her feel uncomfortable
and then he kept following her too.
They were advised to call when the
incident is occurring so that a deputy
can respond. Regarding questions
about pepper spray use and other
forms of self-defense, they were
advised to review Minnesota Statute
624.731.
7:58 p.m. Grand Marais: Animal
disturbance reported. A family of
foxes seems to include one injured
member. Conservation Officers were
not available. Caller was advised
that in this kind of situation, nature
is often allowed to take its course.
Caller was also advised not to get
too close to the animals and to leave
them alone, as the mother fox would
become agitated if she felt the pups
were threatened.
