Tuesday, May 5
1:08 p.m. Pine Tree Drive:
Public assistance. Caller
had questions about
what the laws are for
landowners shooting on
their own land. Wanted
to know if someone can
shoot at beavers on their
own property. Person was
advised that a better option
for shooting was to use a
gravel pit on Clara Lake
Road.
2:45 p.m. Grand Marais:
West Fifth Street. Caller
reported that a juvenile
was trying to sell drugs
to another juvenile at the
playground. Suspect was
threatening to beat up the
other kid. Suspect was no
longer in the area, both
kids were on bikes. Suspect
had the drugs, but what
kind of drugs is unknown.
Caller did not witness this,
victim reported it to them.
3:26 p.m. West Highway
61: Suspicious activity
reported. Distant owner
had a game camera on
property and observed
an unexpected vehicle
with a person taking
photos of the property.
After some investigation
and questioning, it was
determined that the
suspicious person was
working with an insurance
company, inspecting the
property for a new policy.
7:46 p.m. Honeymoon
Trail: Burglary reported.
Break-in to cabin,
windows were damaged,
entry was made through a
window. Suspect is a family
member. There was a

pretty good mess and there
were storage tubs that were
rummaged through.
Wednesday, May 6
12:18 a.m. Grand Marais:
West Fifth Street, check
school. Back door to the
school was unlocked,
door near the football
field. Door was propped
open by a small piece of
wood. Officers checked the
interior of the school and
most doors, cleared the
building. Rooms cleared
and door was locked and
secured.
8:22 a.m. A dog was found
from an earlier lost call.
Unable to contact owners,
but friend was in contact
with Animal Allies to
set something up. Caller
said they would take care
of the dog for the night
and thought they might
know where the owners
were camping. Dog was
reunited with owners.
9:47 a.m. West Highway
61: Tofte structure
fire. Gray white smoke
observed, smelled like
wood burning, but not
coming out of the chimney.
Smoke was coming out
of the roof. Units were
not occupied. Emergency
response staging was set up
at salvage yard across the
street. Road temporarily
closed. Fire appeared to
have started in the attic
area. No foul play was
suspected.
6:02 p.m. Assisted another
agency. A 911 cell phone
call bounced from
Raspberry Campground

on the Red Cliff
Reservation in Bayfield
County, Wisconsin, to
Cook County, Minnesota.
Cell connection was poor,
came in off of the Tofte
tower. Dispatcher spoke
with caller and then
contacted Bayfield County.
Bayfield County said they
would make contact with
the caller.
Thursday, May 7
1:04 p.m. Grand Marais:
West Second Street,
County Courthouse south
entrance area. Caller
reported that people
were gathering at the
courthouse. Caller was
advised that it was a day
of prayer and the people
were from local churches.
The small group of people
practiced social distancing
and most were wearing
facemasks.
4:14 p.m. Grand Portage:
Suspicious activity
reported. An unknown
man, a stranger, has been
approaching people and
visiting homes, asking
if someone is home and
asking for food and money.
He has also approached
juveniles and may be
camping behind the fire
hall. He says he is headed
for the border.
6:47 p.m. Devil Track Lake:
Wesley Lane, shots fired.
Caller reported that they
heard about ten shots fired
just to the east of them.
Incident was investigated,
but Deputy was unable to
locate the shooter and no
sounds of shots were heard
while at the scene.

Friday, May 8
2:50 p.m. Devil Track
Lake: Wesley Lane, shots
fired. Caller reports that
someone was shooting a
high powered rifle near
his house and wondered
if it was legal for people
to shoot that close to
a residence. Deputy’s
investigation determined
that neighbors were
shooting a 9mm and an
AR rifle off of their deck
into a tree at a downward
angle toward the south.
Parties were advised
that that was not a safe
direction to shoot and told
to shoot at the Ball Club
gravel pit instead.
6:08 p.m. East Highway
61 grass fire reported.
Emergency response
activated. Grass fire
was creeping into the
woods. Grass fire was
extinguished, but there was
a stump that was coaling
with flames that flared up
with wind gusts, so the site
was closely monitored.
Saturday, May 9
4:03 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Structure fire reported.
This was a boiler room fire
and all persons were out of
the building. Emergency
services staged at a river.
Fire was extinguished and
mopped up. Fire origin
was not suspicious and no
injuries were reported.
4:15 p.m. Grand Marais:
South Broadway. Caller
states that a seagull built a
nest right outside her front
door and was concerned
that the birds would attack
her as she comes and goes.
Caller was transferred to a
Conservation Officer.
5:22 p.m. County Road
7: Person lost/found.
Caller reported that her
husband went missing
about 90 minutes ago,
had taken dog with him
and headed north from
the house. He went for
a walk and didn’t come
back. Several neighbors
were checking the area
roads and driveways. Man
was located in thick brush
in a northeast location.
He appeared to be okay,
but may have needed a
backboard for transport
out of the woods.
