Tuesday, April 28
5:41 a.m. Trespass: cabin. Neighbor reported that a nearby cabin
was occupied when it was suppose to be vacant and the cabin
was also for sale. Realtor and owner contacted. Cabin occupant
received citation and was asked to leave.
11:55 a.m. Public assistance. Caller inquired about rules
concerning carrying a handgun in the woods to protect against
bears and the like, not a concealed weapon but something to use
to defend yourself. Caller was advised of what can and cannot be
done.
12:51 p.m. Fraud/scam reported. Caller asked about a settlement
she was offered in the mail about when she was incarcerated in
Cook County. Caller has never been to Cook County. As long as
the caller had not given out any personal information, she was
invited to throw away the documents and not worry about it.
Wednesday, April 29
10:47 a.m. Nelson Trail: Burglary. A stamp collection valued at
$150 was reported stolen. No suspects at this time.
11:04 a.m. Grand Marais: North Broadway parking problem.
Neighbor called to complain about an RV camper parked on
the adjacent property. City had sent a letter to property owners.
Owners were advised that they needed to find a new place to park
the camper or they would be cited for violating the city ordinance.
3:48 p.m. Gunflint Trail: welfare check of a child. Caller reported
that a young kid was walking up the Gunflint Trail, dressed in
bright colors and pushing a bike. Caller was concerned about the
kid’s safety. Officer talked to the juvenile, the boy was walking in
the grass on the far shoulder, away from traffic. He was on his way
to visit his grandma on the Old Ski Hill Road. He said he had done
this before and his parents knew he was heading up the Trail.
Thursday, April 30
12:57 p.m. West Highway 61: Public assistance. Caller lives in
Wisconsin and also owns a cabin in Cook County. Caller wanted
to know if he could come up to do some roof repairs, as water
appeared to be leaking into the kitchen area of the cabin. Caller
was reminded of the governor’s stay at home order, but also told
that it wasn’t illegal for him to go to his cabin.
3:11 p.m. Old Shore Road: Suspicious activity. Caller reported that
they were walking on Old Shore Road and they found an arrow.
The arrow had a black shaft, faded black and green or yellow
fletching, a rusted field tip, and an orange nock to it. They were
concerned that someone was shooting arrows in the area which
would be a problem since there was a lot of pedestrian and dog
walking traffic in the area.
4:20 p.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue East burning permit
request. Caller was informed that there is a burning ban on right
now where no snow cover remains and that they will have to wait
until the ban is lifted and conditions are safe again for a fire.
4:42 p.m. Bearskin Lake Road: Smoke in the area. Caller on north
side of lake could see a large plume of smoke on the south shore.
US Forest Service investigated and found that conditions for a safe
brush fire were met: snow coverage of three or more inches and
parties were closely monitoring the burn.
Saturday, May 2
2:41 p.m. West End Water Emergency: Male fisherman fell into
the river by a small bridge; another person pulled him out of
the water. At first, victim was unable to walk, so he was laying
down. DNR officer found man on west side of the river in the old
campground area, man was now standing, breathing, conscious,
and cold. Soon, man was sitting by the lower foot bridge, resting
comfortably. He refused medical transport and left the scene
under his own power.
7:32 p.m. Lost animal report from Tom Lake area. Dog named
Jake, English setter, 60 pounds, white and black with a little brown
fur, ran away in the area where the Superior Hiking Trail meets
Tom Lake Road. No update available on Jake.
8:00 p.m. East Highway 61: Suspicious activity reported. Stranger
walked through caller’s yard and came to her door. Stranger was
unable to answer questions. Moved on to neighbor’s house, rang
doorbell, but no one answered, and then he headed east on the
highway. Man was approached and he said he did not need any
help.
8:43 p.m. East Highway 61: Juveniles gathering on the beach.
Investigation determined that the group had permission to use the
private beach. They were practicing social distancing and staying
in their own tents. The campsite was clean and the group was
respectful, there were no problems.
Sunday, May 3
1:11 a.m. Grand Portage: Townsite Road, sound of loud shot
heard. Caller reported hearing an extremely loud gunshot, just
one shot, it might have been a very large firework. She was in her
laundry room and the loud noise made her jump, woke up her
daughter, startled her son, and freaked out her dog and cat. It was
extremely loud and shouldn’t be going on at this hour of the night.
9:33 a.m. Check hazard requested. Several trees were down
on Perent Lake Road before the county line. County highway
department was notified.
1:12 p.m. Grand Marais: West Third Street. Theft reported and
possible trespass. A battery was stolen out of a truck and a large
fort was being built on the property. A family member had an
argument with someone about trespassing two weeks ago.
4:57 p.m. East Highway 61: Fraud or scam reported. Caller
received a threatening email for the fourth time. They did not
share any personal information. Dispatcher advised caller to
forward the email to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety:

7:11 p.m. Tofte: Bayview Drive trespass complaint. All terrain
vehicles (ATV) and Off highway motorized vehicles (OHM) were
traveling on private property without permission. Owner may put
up a fence to prevent future trespasses.
8:47 p.m. East Highway 61: smoke, possible structure fire reported.
A lot of white smoke was coming from a property with a house,
an old wooden garage and a three-stall garage. Smoke appeared
to be coming out of the chimney and the roof looked like it was
steaming. Out-of-state owner was contacted. Fire was contained
by the Colvill and Hovland Fire volunteers.
