Tuesday, March 24
7:02 a.m. Grand Marais: East Highway 61 Drive-off. Local
gas station reported that a small green Toyota truck headed
east on Highway 61 and drove off without paying a $26.86
gas charge.
Wednesday, March 25
8:51 a.m. Damage to property reported. Vandalism to a
groomer on the North Shore State Trail, about a mile north
of the shelter on Pike Lake. There was damage to the door
handle and the fender was broken. It appears to have been
taken out for a joy ride. Evidence gathered. Employees
brought the machine back to the shop in Two Harbors.
Incident happened over the weekend.
2:54 p.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road theft. Approximately $4000
stolen from an employee’s room that is part of employee
housing above the laundry.
4:14 p.m. East Highway 61: Public assistance offered. A
person walking south on Highway 61 with a duffel bag
was approached by a Deputy. Party stated that they were a
US citizen, but were also from Sweden, with no passport
available. Person had an expired Texas ID. They were not
trying to get into Canada, just interested in the State Parks.
They considered themselves homeless and were planning on
making their way to Hinckley. Person was polite and lucid.
6:22 p.m. County Road 7: Animal disturbance. Caller
reported that towards the end of County Road 7, a black
poodle is always running in front of cars. This is dangerous
for the vehicles and the dog. Can something be done about
the dog? Officer drove through the area but was unable to
locate the dog. Caller was informed that there is no leash
law in Cook County outside of the Grand Marais city limits.
Thursday, March 26
9:34 a.m. Gunflint Trail: Unwanted person on premises.
Homeless person from Sweden was in lobby asking for food
and looking for assistance. Officer picked up person and
waited with them at the courthouse until they connected
with a county Social Worker.
10:23 a.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue East, welfare check
requested. Local physician called to request welfare check
on patient who missed a phone visit this morning. Patient
may have fallen or had adverse reaction to new medication.
Officer visited patient, patient was fine and may have
overslept. Patient was advised to call their doctor.
10:47 a.m. East Highway 61: Motor vehicle accident with
property damage. Caller reported that they lost a trailer off
of a truck. The trailer is overturned in the woods beyond
the ditch area. No injuries to report and the truck is fine.
Owners will arrange their own tow service.
4:16 p.m. Trespass situation. Caught on surveillance
cameras, four teenagers, two male and two female, went
inside a building with paint cans. They were located at the
scene and each person was issued a trespassing citation.
5:38 p.m. Grand Marais: Unknown trouble on West
Second Street. 911 call line open with kids shouting
in the background plus other muffled sounds. Officer
investigated, spoke with mother and all the kids. They did
not understand that even though the cell phone they were
playing with was not activated, it could still dial emergency
services.
Friday, March 27
9:32 a.m. Arrowhead Trail: Public assistance requested.
Called in by radio, second hand. There is a vehicle stuck at
the end of the Arrowhead Trail near Little John Lake. It is
a two-wheel drive Ford Escape that is not very far in, tow
service will just need a winch. Local tow service contacted.
11:38 a.m. Grand Marais: West Highway 61: Welfare check
requested for animal. Caller reported that someone was
abusing their dog, yelling and screaming and way laying on
top of the animal. Owner and dog were located by a Deputy.
Deputy observed that the dog appears to be in good shape
and good health. Dog owner stated that people need to
mind their own business, that there is nothing wrong with
the way he disciplines his dog.
12:07 p.m. West Highway 61: Open door. Officer discovered
storage unit with door wide open. Owners contacted, they
were making trips back and forth all day, and hoped to be
finished by tonight.
Saturday, March 28
12:31 a.m. County Road 7: Neighbor complaint. Caller
reported that their neighbor was having a loud party
with trucks doing burnouts on the road. Deputy visited
neighbors and reminded them that as property owners, they
were responsible for keeping their guests quiet. Property
owner stated that the disturbances would stop.
3:25 p.m. Devil Track Lake: Wesley Lane. Caller reported
that there were 20-25 people in the middle of the lake
running snowmobile races. Caller wondered if that was
legal due to the current stay-at-home order from the
Governor. When Deputy checked out the situation about 30
minutes later, no one remained on the lake.
Sunday, March 29
3:58 p.m. West Highway 61: Public assistance requested.
Caller was worried about a stream that goes through her
father’s property and into Lake Superior because the stream
was blocked by ice and was flooding the land. Also, part
of the road is being flooded out. The flooding was all on
private property, so the landowners are responsible.
Monday, March 30
1:57 a.m. North Road: Hazard check requested. Water is
overflowing the road. County Highway staff contacted. They
said they were working on roads and other washouts all day
yesterday and were grateful for the information.
6:49 a.m. Chicago Bay Road: Parking complaint. Caller
requested patrols in the area as there seemed to be lots of
people parked all over the Hovland area in different parking
lots. Deputy spoke with one party who had a cabin they
were going to and had arrived very early in the morning.
They did not want to try to go to the cabin in the dark,
so they were waiting for daylight. No concerns or issues
observed. Hovland area was patrolled and no other vehicles
were parked anywhere unusual.
