It is the policy of the Cook County News-Herald to withhold the identities of individuals in Cook County Law Enforcement briefs. When court proceedings are complete, the Cook County News-Herald publishes a complete accounting of names and penalties in its Matters of Record.

Saturday, March 14

12:36 p.m. Sugar Loaf Road, Animal visitor. A small dog, possibly a male Chihauhau, has been around the caller’s house for a few days. Caller feeds the dog and then it runs away from them to hide behind the garage where it sleeps in some straw. The group Animal Advocates was contacted.

Sunday, March 15

9:35 a.m. Spruce Creek Lane: Damage to property. Renter did not stay home last night because they had an argument with their boyfriend. When they returned home this morning, the house was flooded because the boyfriend had left every water faucet in the house on. Landlord had been contacted, but caller wanted to make a report with the Sheriff ’s office.

10:37 a.m. Grand Marais: First Avenue East neighbor trouble. Neighbor was noisy all night: yelling, screaming, and singing until 5 a.m. Caller was asked to report disturbances when they occur and to also notify the apartment manager. Tuesday, March 17

6:54 a.m. Grand Marais: Neighbor trouble on First Avenue East. A neighbor with a history of yelling, screaming, and being loud and disruptive in other ways, was cited for disorderly conduct. 7:42 a.m. West Highway 61: Welfare check requested.

Landlord was concerned that a renter might need medical intervention or detox. County Human Service staff were contacted and the renter was taken to North Shore Health. Later, it was determined that the person needed to go to Duluth. Their personal effects were gathered up and brought to them for the trip to Duluth.

6:44 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Public assistance requested. Person came to the Law Enforcement Center. They were trying to contact emergency services (911) in Duluth and didn’t know how to do that from Cook County. The dispatcher prompted them to dial 911 and was then able to transfer the call to St. Louis County.

10:29 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Public assistance requested. Deputy in squad car was flagged down by a stranded snowmobiler. Snowmobiler had been separated from another sled rider about two hours before. Snowmobiler was given a ride to the lodge and casino to meet up with the other sled rider.

Thursday, March 19

6:28 a.m. Gunflint Trail: Checked hazard. Two logging trucks were stuck on the Gunflint Trail. Snowplow was available to assist, traffic direction needed because one logging truck was blocking a traffic lane. Both trucks were dug out and continued up the trail.

3:36 p.m. Grand Marais: Cedar Grove business area parking complaint. Deputy investigated and found a truck with a snowmobile trailer parked on the west side shoulder of Cedar Grove Lane, near the snowmobile trail. The vehicle and trailer were not a hazard or an obstruction. No parking restrictions were posted; no citation was issued.

Friday, March 20

6:55 a.m. Gunflint Trail: Checked hazard. A large fallen tree was blocking the whole road on Third Street between Second and Third Avenue West in Grand Marais. Street crew contacted and debris was cleared from the road.

7:54 p.m. Grand Marais: Cedar Grove Lane, damage to property. Caller had been snowmobiling and when he returned to his vehicle, the driver’s side door was sprayed with some black tar or chemical substance. Substance was on the door, window, and side mirror of his truck.

10:52 p.m. Grand Marais: Gas drive off on East Highway 61. Suspected vehicle was caught on camera but could not be located in the county. Amount of gas theft was $64.69. Cross reference call from Lake County determined that the driver had experienced a medical emergency and would pay once they were stabilized.

Saturday, March 21

1:24 p.m. Grand Marais: Public assistance requested on East First Street. Business reported that they had been told by customers that the Star Tribune put out an article encouraging the public to head north to escape the coronavirus. And that someone from Edina had come in and bought out all of the toilet paper.

1:50 p.m. Grand Marais: Public assistance requested on East Highway 61. Local gas station reported that people were filling unapproved containers with gas.

2:11 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Pincushion Drive snowmobile complaint. Two snowmobilers were riding the ski trails. Citations were issued.

Sunday, March 22

12:46 a.m. Grand Marais: Animal lost/found on Second Avenue West. Caller reported that their black and white dog named Spark Plug took off and they were unable to catch him. Deputy located Spark Plug and reunited the dog with owner.

12:42 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Structure fire on East Bearskin Road. Responding units found structure engulfed in flames. No injuries reported. Fire was monitored closely to ensure that it did not spread. Cause of fire undetermined.
