It is the policy of the Cook County News-Herald to withhold the identities of individuals in Cook County Law Enforcement briefs. When court proceedings are complete, the Cook County News-Herald publishes a complete accounting of names and penalties in its Matters of Record.

Tuesday, February 18

10:05 a.m. Snowmobile Trail: Medical assistance requested. Two people riding one snowmobile crashed into a tree and were severely injured. Female was wedged in between a tree. Male had bloody nose and injured leg. Search and Rescue responded, also Cook County Deputies, Medics, and EMTs. Both victims transported off the trail and to North Shore Health.

Wednesday, February 19

12:02 p.m. Onion River Road: Motor vehicle accident with property damage. Caller reported hitting a patch of ice on February 2 that caused their vehicle to crash into a snow bank. A passerby assisted in getting the vehicle out of the snow bank. There was damage to the vehicle on the front passenger side bumper area. A police report was required for an insurance claim.

12:32 p.m. Lutsen: Medical assistance requested on Ski Hill Road. Unresponsive male, 60s, found on Moose Mountain. Appeared to have facial injuries. Ski Patrol responded, as did Search and Rescue plus other first responders. Victim died on the mountain. Medical transport requested, body taken to Midwest Medical Examiner in Anoka. Family notified and assisted as needed.

2:37 p.m. Two people with dogs in a GMC Sierra 1500 truck got stuck. They traveled the Gunflint Trail to Greenwood Lake Road to Firebox Road, but then accidently turned onto the snowmobile trail and got stuck when they tried to turn around. Towing company could not find the vehicle, drove entire Firebox Road, saw tracks onto Powers Lake Road but it was not plowed. Apple Maps was not accurate for the area. County dispatcher helped towing company locate stranded truck using caller’s location coordinates. Truck was pulled out and everyone was okay.

8:07 p.m. Creechville Road and South Shore Drive: Suspicious activity. First caller reported that a male high school student was walking home when a strange man in a car pulled up and told the student that there was a drone following the student. The second caller reported that a strange man in a car drove up their driveway, got out of the car, and told the caller that he had video of them kidnapping children. Thursday, February 20 12:58 p.m. Grand Marais: Fifth Avenue West. Garbage call. Security cameras at the County Recycle Center captured a person discarding items after-hours at the center. These incidents will be reported to Law Enforcement.

5:09 p.m. East Highway 61: Property lost/found. Person dropped off an unusual ring they had found in the post office parking lot. Person became aware that someone had lost a similar ring on the Arrowhead Transit bus. The ring is dark with a stone surrounded by small dragon heads. The ring can be claimed at the Law Enforcement Center.

Friday, February 21

3:22 a.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road, loud music complaint. When caller knocked on neighbor’s door and asked them to turn some loud music down, the neighbor turned the music up louder. This happened four nights in a row. There was only silence when the officer investigated the complaint. A little while later, caller reported that neighbor was blasting the music again and pounding on the walls. Officer returned to the scene and observed the reported behavior. Citation issued for disorderly conduct and warning issued for possible arrest if behavior continues.

10:17 a.m. Grand Portage: Bay Estates Drive welfare check requested. Grand Portage Head Start staff requested that the welfare of their bus driver be checked. He had called in sick yesterday and did not report to work this morning. They were worried about him.

Saturday, February 22

9:09 a.m. Airport informational: Pilot flew around with a biologist from Grand Portage tracking collared wolves. They were in the areas of Cascade State Park and Reservation River Road; they flew in circles to survey the animals.

12:28 p.m. East Highway 61: Animal disturbance. Caller found a stray black lab dog with a red collar; dog was not injured. Dog’s owner was notified and retrieved their dog. The dog had been running around the road, chasing cars.

Sunday, February 23

12:53 a.m. Grand Portage: Upper Road medical assistance requested. Male, age 79, may have suffered a heart attack. Experienced pain across the chest, headache, short rapid breaths. Transported to North Shore Health.

4:13 p.m. West Highway 61: Check hazard. There was a snowmobile in the middle of the highway. It had fallen off a trailer. Sled is yellow, may be a Ski-Doo. Minnesota State Patrol was notified and headed to the scene.

5:02 p.m. Grand Marais: Animal disturbance on Eighth Avenue West. Caller reported that a small hunting dog was running around the rec park campground area. Dog was chocolate brown with long ears, short hair speckled on sides, like a springer spaniel/ hound mix. Dog was timid when approached and kept hiding under RVs and the wood pile. When Officer arrived, caller and dog were together. Dog was probably taken to the city pound or an animal foster home.

Monday, February 24

10:57 a.m. Facebook Harassment: Caller reported that they were getting harassed online because of their dog mushing program. Harassment was coming from someone in Illinois and was all done on Facebook. Threats were made that animal control would be called and the mushing program reported. Messages were received through a group Facebook page about mushing. Caller was advised to inform the party that their messages were not welcomed or wanted, and then to block the party from viewing the Facebook page.

12:04 p.m. Lutsen: Counterfeit money. A fake $50 bill was used on Lutsen Mountains. The counterfeit bill was turned over to Law Enforcement.

2:44 p.m. East Highway 61: Medical assistance requested. Female, age 84, was badly scratched when her two cats started fighting and attacking. The two cats started fighting with each other. When a pillow was thrown at them, the cats went nuts and attacked the woman and her brother. The cats had never behaved like this before and were long time family members. Officer used a catch pole and captured both cats, then secured them in separate crates. Animal Advocates were contacted.
