Tuesday, February 4
11:23 a.m. Airport Road Informational: Caller reported
that they would be in an airplane flying around Cascade
and Naniboujou. They were looking for wolves to count
wolf packs.
2:27 p.m. Lutsen, West Highway 61: Checked welfare
of stranded motorist. Driver had run out of gas.
Transported to gas station to get gas and transported
back to their vehicle.
3:29 p.m. Grand Marais, West Third Street: Snowmobile
complaint. Caller reported that an older red snowmobile
parked at the end of West Third Street had been there for
at least three nights. Caller wanted to make sure that it
wasn’t stolen and abandoned. Sled had 2003 registration
info and some mechanical problems. City will have to
decide what to do with it.
6:32 p.m. Fradenburg Drive: Disturbance reported.
Neighbor’s reported that they could hear a lot of
screaming sounds, like a girl was screaming for help.
It turned out that a child had gotten stuck in a chicken
coop and was able to free themselves before the first
responders arrived. Child was okay.
Wednesday, February 5
1:44 a.m. West Highway 61: Suspicious activity reported.
Vehicle was seen slowly driving around a closed business
parking lot. Driver stopped and explained to Deputy
that they had been told that lights had been left on at the
business. There were no lights on.
5:20 p.m. Grand Marais: Animal welfare checked. Caller
reported that a dog tied near the public library was
whimpering outside in the winter cold. Dog’s owner was
later observed screaming at the dog and may have kicked
or hit the dog. Deputy searched for owner and dog, but
was unable to find them. Reports of animal abuse can be
used to help protect those animals in the future.
Thursday, February 6
10:43 a.m. Railroad Drive: Drug incident reported.
Person cleaning rental property found a small bag of
white powder by the toilet and was unsure if it was
drugs. The powder had no scent. Deputy conducted
tests on the unknown substance and determined that it
was not cocaine or meth. After negative test results, the
powder was discarded.
4:03 p.m. Sawbill Trail: Welfare check requested.
Landlord was concerned about a renter that was
missing and had not reported to work for several weeks.
Landlord was aware that renter had some serious health
issues and was concerned about their well being. Person
matching name and description of renter was found
on Facebook. Communication using Facebook was
suggested.
5:44 p.m. East Highway 61: Motor vehicle accident with
animal. Deer was hit, no human injuries. Deer was
dispatched; meat salvaged by local citizen. Citizen was
issued a deer possession permit. Vehicle was leaking
fluids, towing service contacted.
8:26 p.m. Crank 9-1-1 call: 911 hang up occurred.
Call was rang back, male reported that there was no
emergency, it was his daughter, everything was okay.
Friday, February 7
10:26 a.m. Lutsen: Fraud/scam reported on Old Ski
Hill Road. Caller reported that someone attempted to
charge items on their credit card, took over their Netflix
account, and also applied for a Lowe’s credit card.
Equifax suggested they report these incidents to law
enforcement. Caller will continue to work with Equifax
to monitor their accounts and social security number.
10:41 a.m. Grand Marais: Property lost on Eighth
Avenue West. Caller lost their wallet either on Eighth
Avenue West or at the Ski Hill. Walked up the sledding
hill, did not find wallet, new snow had covered the hill.
Wallet may be buried under the new snow.
1:37 p.m. West Highway 61: Theft. Caller reported that
four propane tanks were taken from their property.
Suspect named.
Sunday, February 9
3:32 p.m. Requested welfare check of a family member.
A brother had not returned phone calls for over a
week and that seemed unlike him. The brother does
not have health issues, seems pretty healthy. Two cell
phone numbers for the brother go directly to voice mail.
Deputy visited the brother and he was fine. The brother
stated that he had been in a disagreement recently and
didn’t want to talk to the family member.
Monday, February 10
9:45 a.m. Property lost/found on East Highway 61 near
Hovland. Caller reported that they found a black rifle
case with an injection rifle inside. A Grand Portage
biologist was contacted to see if they had lost any
equipment over the weekend during their moose survey
work. It turns out that the back of their truck had opened
up and they were missing some items: the injection rifle,
cooler, food and cooking items.
