Tuesday, January 28
8:18 a.m. Fireweed Lane: Property found. Caller found hearing
aids on the snowmobile trail between Sawbill and Skyport.
9:20 a.m. Pike Lake Road: Suspicious activity reported. Caller
was gone for three weeks. When they arrived home yesterday,
they found two empty beer cans in their mail box. Nothing was
missing, they just wanted to report what was found.
1:33 p.m. Onion River Road: Checked hazard. Black car with
Texas license plates was blocking part of the road. Left blinker was
on but no one was in the car and there were no foot prints in the
snow around the car.
7:20 p.m. Grand Marais: Public assistance requested on Fourth
Avenue West. Caller reported that both last night and tonight they
smelled something unpleasant, possibly a gas/propane kind of
smell, on the upper side of West Fifth Street near the Community
Center. Both incidents were at approximately 7 p.m. and in
the same spot, near the sidewalk close to a shed. Investigation
uncovered a smell that was decay or rot, not gas or chemical.
County maintenance was notified.
Wednesday, January 29
10:28 a.m. Grand Marais: Suspicious activity reported on West
Fifth Street at the school. Caller was worried about a strong
smell of marijuana in the kindergarten classroom and requested
that the K9 dog help search for the source of the smell. Dog was
not available. Classroom was checked, no marijuana found, but
classroom had a strong musty smell due to the kids’ wet outdoor
clothing.
11:00 a.m. North Road: Neighbor trouble. Caller reported that
their neighbor allows three dogs to run off-leash in the road.
While driving recently, the caller almost hit one dog and then
almost went into the ditch. Caller is concerned that the dogs may
be injured or cause an accident. Caller was advised that there is
no leash law outside of Grand Marais in Cook County. The dogs
are a springer, retriever, and a smaller dog that may be a cocker
spaniel. An officer spoke with the caller and then went to visit the
neighbor. The neighbor said, “They are dogs and I won’t put them
on a cable. Most of the neighbors are fine with the dogs.”
Thursday, January 30
10:55 a.m. Devil Track Road: Animal lost. Caller was working
with Border Patrol and came across a white sled dog while
snowmobiling on the trail. The dog was pure white, 40-50 pounds
with a pink collar that said “Mowgli.” Owner’s phone number was
on the collar, number was called and message left. Earlier, the
white dog had been seen running around with another black and
white dog, but someone loaded up the black and white dog into a
vehicle and drove away. Update: Mowgli and owner were reunited.
1:05 p.m. Grand Portage: Fraud/ID scam on Bay Road. Caller
reported that someone claiming to be from the Social Security
Department called and said that the caller’s social security benefits
had been discontinued. The victim gave out their social security
number. Victim does not have internet access, so an IRS “Identity
Theft and Social Security” pamphlet was printed and the Grand
Portage Deputy brought it along for the incident interview. Victim
had notified their bank and credit card companies. They were
advised to contact Law Enforcement if anything strange happens
in the accounts.
4:18 p.m. Grand Marais: Fraud/ID scam on Eleventh Avenue West.
Caller received two social security fraud calls from two separate
phone numbers, decided it was a scam and did not give out any
information or funds. Caller reported the phone numbers that
were used for the scams.
Friday, January 31
6:02 p.m. Grand Marais: Animal reported lost on East First Street.
Mini Aussie dog named “Pike” ran away from the Co-op and had
been running around town for about thirty minutes. Owners were
visitors and could not find the dog. An officer saw the dog run
across the Law Enforcement Center parking lot heading north.
The dog turned and ran toward the school by the football fields.
Officer called to the dog, but Pike would not come to a stranger.
Owners thanked the officer for trying to secure the dog. Owners
were still looking for the dog the next day when Pike was struck
by a car on Highway 61, badly hurt but still alive. Owners were
reunited with the injured dog. No further update.
8:22 p.m. North Road: Medical assistance requested. Man found
laying on the side of the road, conscious but bleeding from the
mouth. First responders contacted his wife and the man was taken
home.
10:37 p.m. West Highway 61: Medical assistance requested. Young
man in his twenties, was possibly suffering from a drug overdose.
He was conscious, breathing, talking, but not making any sense.
Transported to North Shore Health.
Saturday, February 1
10:19 a.m. Unusual animal behavior reported. First caller stated
that a raccoon had been sitting in the road for at least one hour
and they were concerned about the animal. Second caller said
that the raccoon had moved to the side of the road and was curled
up into a ball, but still alive. When officer arrived on the scene,
someone was trying to rescue the animal. Animal could not be
rescued and was put down.
11:58 a.m. Lutsen: Ski Hill Road Medical assistance requested.
Female, 32, suffered head injury with seizures. Transported to
North Shore Health.
Sunday, February 2
6:07 p.m. Gunflint Trail: Century Link outage reported that
effected 118 customers in Grand Marais and Hovland. Within 90
minutes, test calls from Golden Eagle Lodge, Lutsen Resort, Best
Western, and a Hovland residence were completed; all lines were
back up and running.
