Wednesday, January 22
1:00 a.m. Grand Marais:
West Wisconsin Street,
found parked pickup
truck that looked like
back window of topper
was shattered by the wind.
Patched up window with
tape, contacted owner.
1:12 a.m. Grand Marais:
Vehicle was in ditch off road
near the library. Vehicle was
unoccupied and had open
containers. Owner was in
a home near the vehicle
and came out when officer
arrived. Owner explained
that when they were driving,
the vehicle slid off the road.
Officer discovered that
owner’s license was revoked.
Owner cited for driving
after revocation (DAR) and
warned for open container
violation.
7:32 a.m. Grand Marais:
School monitored on West
Fifth Street. No speeding
or crosswalk violations
observed.
8:02 a.m. East Highway 61:
Checked hazard. Highway
was drifted over with
snow due to strong winds;
Minnesota Department of
Transportation contacted for
plow service.
2:45 p.m. Theft reported at
Spruce Creek. Caller saw
one man and one woman
take stuff out of a vehicle.
Suspects were still on the

property; their vehicle was
stuck behind the garage.
Caller had marks on their
arm from fighting with one
suspect. Suspects were found
and gave permission for
vehicle search; officer looked
for stolen items. Statements
were taken.
4:26 p.m. Grand Marais:
Medical assistance requested
on First Avenue East.
Female, 86, experiencing
pain all over, with pain
traveling up to shoulder.
Person was conscious and
breathing. Transported to
North Shore Health.

Thursday, January 23
12:39 p.m. Grand Marais:
Motor vehicle accident with
animal occurred on West
Fifth Street. Deer was dead
and removed from the road.
Vehicle was not damaged,
but there was some fur on
the grill.
8:04 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Received crank 9-1-1 call.
Man apologized for the call.
He said he was driving a car
that he had never driven
before and “pushed the
wrong damn button.”

Friday, January 24
6:47 a.m. Cascade Beach
Road: Medical assistance
requested. Female, 78, semiconscious, felt cold and
clammy, experienced chest
pain and light headedness

with shallow breathing.
Transported to North Shore
Health.
11:22 a.m. East Highway
61: Motor vehicle accident
involved animal. Deer
struck driver side of vehicle
and caused $4000 to $5000
damage to vehicle. Deer
ran away from scene of the
accident.
2:04 p.m. East Highway
61: Public assistance
requested. Caller purchased
a snowmobile that had
more than one VIN number
and was concerned that
it might have been built
from stolen parts. Side
panels and chassis numbers
didn’t match. Seller’s name
matched one of the VIN
numbers and the other parts
were not registered as stolen.
Caller also called the DNR
to report the two different
VINs on the sled.
8:26 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Property reported lost on
Pincushion Drive. Lost
diamond engagement ring
in the Pincushion Mountain
parking area. Ring had oval
diamond on rose gold band
with surrounding diamonds.
Ring was lost earlier in
the day. Update: the ring
was located in the person’s
driveway the next morning.

Friday, January 25
11:53 a.m. Lutsen: Medical
assistance requested on Ski
Hill Road. Male, 23, may
have dislocated their right
shoulder. Lutsen ski patrol
reported they had a second
person with a broken arm:
Female, 37, had a possible
broken humerus bone
and wrist. Both people
transported to North Shore
Health.
12:57 p.m. Lutsen: Criminal
Sexual contact on Ski Hill
Road. Female victim went to
the emergency room; assault
happened in Lutsen. Rape
suspect named, interviewed,
photographed, and DNA
sample was collected.
4:54 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Property reported found at
local thrift shop. Credit card
and Social Security card
were found in a coat that
was donated to the thrift
shop. Items were brought
to the Law Enforcement
Center. It was determined
that the owner of the cards
was deceased.
5:05 p.m. Grand Marais:
Public assistance requested
on Croftville Road. A
rented U-Haul truck had
slid down an icy driveway
and the front end of the
truck was blocking the road.
Cook County Towing was
contacted.

7:47 p.m. Gunflint Trail:
Vehicle was in ditch on
Skyport Lane. A oneton truck with enclosed
snowmobile trailer was stuck
in the ditch. Wrecker called.
8:08 p.m. Grand Marais:
Animal lost on East Fifth
Street. Caller’s dog ran off
when they were near the
Gopher Cabins. Dog was a
very friendly female, white
and gray German shepherd/
boxer mix. Answered to
“Jezebel” and wore a tag
with owner’s phone number.
Update: Dog was found the
next day; she had suffered
from sore paws and possible
frostbite, but otherwise okay.

Saturday, January 26
12:04 p.m. Grand Portage:
Follow up to theft reported
on Townsite Road, January
17, 2020. Missing items
included diamond willow
lamp, radio and cords.
Suspects were interviewed.
Items were loaned out to
them to use in their new
home; items were not stolen.
Radio was returned.
2:47 p.m. West Highway
61: Motor vehicle accident
involved animal. Deer ran
into driver’s side door of
deputy’s squad car, caused
dent in the door. No injury
to deputy. Deer ran away
from the accident scene.

4:36 p.m. Grand Marais:
Checked hazard. Some
flooding observed on First
Avenue West. Lake formed
in the roadway. Someone
tried to clear a lane for the
water to flow through the
snow to the lake. Grand
Marais street crew member
notified.
8:56 p.m. Grand Marais:
Property found on West
Wisconsin Street. Caller
reported that a Sven &
Ole’s employee went to
the bank to get some cash
and found a debit card in
the ATM machine. The
card was brought to the
Law Enforcement Center.
The debit card owner was
contacted and wanted to
thank everyone for the
return of the card.

Sunday, January 27
5:45 a.m. West Highway
61: Unusual light activity
observed on the Minnesota
Power smoke stacks. Caller
reported that the lights on
top of the smoke stacks were
flashing constantly and this
seemed unusual. Caller was
worried that there might be
something wrong; the lights
had been flashing for at least
an hour. The Minnesota
Power dispatcher was
contacted and they promised
to report back if there was
any cause for concern.
