Sunday, Aug. 28
12:07 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller complained
about loud music coming from the Gunflint
Tavern. A deputy checked, and the noise stopped
at 12:10 a.m.
8:54 a.m., Grand Marais: Forest Lake man, 47,
cited for unattended fire in a pit near Poplar Lake.
9:03 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller said someone cut
down two trees in her yard.
9:08 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller said he has been
harassed at the resort where he works, and he
believes drugs have been put into his food. He said
he was quitting his job and will head to Louisiana.
1:41 p.m., Colvill: Report of a llama in the caller’s
yard, eating clover. The owner was notified.
6:31 p.m., Tofte: Caller expressed concern
about a drunk driver who broke a sign post at
Sawbill Store.
10:10 p.m., Grand Portage: Border Patrol stopped
a person who had hits in the northwest states,
multiple aliases and IDs for different states.
Oregon did not wish to extradite. A deputy went
to assist.
11:23 p.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about the
loud music at the Gunflint Tavern. A deputy went
to speak with the owner.
Monday, Aug. 29
7:43 a.m., Grand Marais: Horses running loose on
County Road 14.
8:09 a.m., Grand Portage: Man arrested for
terroristic threats after calling from detox and
threatening to strangle his mother.
8:29 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputy assistance
requested at the pharmacy in case there are any
problems with an employee who is going to be fired.
4:22 p.m., Grand Marais: Highway Department
requested that deputies monitor speeds in the
construction zone on Devil Track Road due to a lot
of complaints about speeders in the 35 mph zone.
6:54 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported a possible
drunk driver who parked in front of Sven’s and got
out with a beer bottle and put it in the trash.
10:08 p.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about kids in
the skate park after hours.
Tuesday, Aug. 30
6:20 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported that
someone is burning garbage near Cutoff Road,
for the second day in a row. A deputy could smell
smoke, but it did not smell like burning garbage.
The fire could not be located.
11:45 a.m., Lutsen: Lutsen Resort reported the
theft of two flat screen TVs from their units.
12:18 p.m., Grand Marais: gas drive-off of $25
from Holiday. The driver returned and paid.
1:36 p.m., Grand Marais: Gas drive-off of $55.71
from Holiday.
2:07 p.m., Thunder Bay woman, 48, cited for theft.
5:43 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller complained about
a wind mill convoy he has been following for 30
miles. He said they wouldn’t let anyone pass, and
there was a very long line of cars behind them.
State patrol notified.
11:24 p.m., Grand Marais: Gunflint Tavern asked
that a deputy check on an intoxicated person who
fell flat on his face and could barely walk, and
shouldn’t be out wandering around on his own.
Wednesday, Aug. 31
8:27 a.m., Tofte: Reported theft of a camera and
purse out of a vehicle parked at AmericInn. A bike
was also stolen out of the back of a truck parked in
the lot a couple days ago.
7:40 p.m., Lutsen: Deputy called to settle a
domestic dispute.
7:59 p.m., Grand Portage: Caller reported that a man
who appeared to be intoxicated was walking down
Townsite Road. He was struggling to get his jacket
on and was hooting and hollering along the way.
Thursday, Sept. 1
9:01 a.m., Grand Marais: A chocolate lab was
placed in the pound after running loose on Eighth
Avenue West.
10:32 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller complained
about a “stop for pedestrians” sign that was placed
at the stoplight on Highway 61. The caller said
people have been walking out into the street,
against the lights, forcing traffic with a green light
to stop. The call was referred to City Hall.
5:28 p.m., Lutsen: Two-vehicle head-on collision
near mile marker 88. Two people were transported
to the hospital.
9:58 p.m., Grand Portage: Underage
drinking party on Townsite Road
was reported.
Friday, Sept. 2
1:37 a.m., Grand Portage: Deputy
called to a loud party that got
violent on Townsite Road. One
vehicle was seen leaving, and
was pursued by Customs but it
turned into a residence and the
driver would not allow officers
entry. A subject also shot out a
window with a BB gun and broke a
large screen TV.
7:50 a.m., Grand Marais: A man with black
hair wearing a red shirt and really long dark shorts
was seen walking around a trailer at the Rec Park.
When confronted, the man said he was looking for
matches.
8:54 a.m., Grand Marais: Gas drive-off of $47.80
from Holiday. The person later called and paid
the bill.
9:50 a.m., Hovland: Complaint about teenagers
riding off-road bikes up and down Caspers Hill
Road.
4:52 p.m., Grand Marais: A vehicle parked at
Go-Fer Cabins was keyed.
7:53 p.m., Lutsen: A call was received about
someone exposing himself at the shower building
at Cascade State Park. Investigation revealed there
was no criminal intent/conduct; it was just an
awkward moment with open shower doors after
park personnel cleaned the building. The suspect
said someone looked into the showers, and he
didn’t know what to say.
Saturday, Sept. 3
7:19 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported that the
window of the county building on Sag Landing
has been busted out, and there is a vehicle parked
there even though there’s a “no parking” sign.
10:43 a.m., Grand Marais: Horses running loose
on Pike Lake Road.
3:15 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said he found a
motorcycle with a trailer hidden in the bushes near
the North Brule bridge.
4:34 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of people on the
deck of Windigo shooting either a shotgun or rifle
out toward the lake.
6:50 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy called to
investigate a possible residential break-in.
Sunday, Sept. 4
1:06 a.m., Grand Marais: Domestic argument.
2:18 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of a vehicle
squealing tires on the Gunflint Trail. A deputy
spoke with the driver.
9:26 a.m., Tofte: Dog bite reported.
2:34 p.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about a
neighbor who was skeet shooting. It’s legal, but not
safe. A game warden was called.
7:23 p.m., Grand Marais: Report that some kids
were throwing rocks and breaking windows at
Bally’s blacksmith shop.
11:06 p.m., Tofte: Complaint about a loud group of
campers.
Monday, Sept. 5
1:21 a.m., Grand Marais: Report that someone
broke the passenger window of a vehicle parked at
Birch Terrace, and threw a bottle of beer inside.
10:38 a.m., Grand Marais: Gas drive-off of $58.19
from Holiday. The man came in and asked where
the bank is, and then left without paying for the gas.
Tuesday, Sept. 6
11:00 a.m., Grand Portage: Caller said her dog is
sick, and it may have been poisoned.
2:10 p.m., Hovland: Caller reported the theft of a
brush cutter and other equipment that was left on
his driveway.
3:17 p.m., Grand Marais: Citation issued to a
Grand Marais juvenile, 17, for loud exhaust.
3:30 p.m., Grand Marais: School bus stop arm
violation reported at 1816 W. Highway 61. It was a
tan van.
6:05 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported that his
girlfriend has been drinking all day, and is now
threatening suicide.
Wednesday, Sept. 7
6:05 a.m., Schroeder: Smoldering fire in the
bunker at Taconite Harbor. Schroeder and Tofte
fire departments were paged, along with the Cook
County Ambulance.
10:38 a.m., Tofte: Report of a white Qwest
Diagnostic truck with green stripes driving very
erratic and passing cars about a mile east of Tofte.
Thursday, Sept. 8
12:37 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputy requested
to dispatch an injured deer at Highway 61 and
Sawbill Trail.
8:00 a.m., Grand Portage: Caller said a person
is trespassing at the Elder’s housing complex by
residing with a relative.
8:58 a.m., Grand Marais: Deer struck by a vehicle
at Highway 61 and County Road 14.
11:05 a.m., Grand Marais: Report that people have
been partying and dumping garbage at Nelson’s
Storage.
12:29 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy called to the
pool parking lot, where a vehicle had been parked
for several days.
1:50 p.m., Grand Marais: Forest fire on Lake
Twelve off USFS 309D.
Friday, Sept. 9
7:33 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller said he put his
car in the ditch near Seagull Outfitters last night
because he was driving too fast and a fox came
out. There was heavy front-end damage, but no
injuries.
1:38 p.m., Tofte: Gas drive-off of $100.29 reported.
2:27 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported a person
driving without a license from his residence to
Birch Terrace. A deputy found the vehicle already
parked with nobody around.
3:18 p.m., Tofte: Gas drive-off of $20.64 reported.
It turns out there was confusion because the
customer had two pumps but only paid one.
Arrangements for payment were made.
4:33 p.m., Tofte: Two-vehicle accident in the
Bluefin parking lot. The caller said he believes it
was the other driver’s fault, and the other driver
will not exchange insurance info with him.
5:27 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said that every
night for the past few months, a young neighbor is
screaming and crying. Sometimes it happens early,
sometimes in the middle of the night. The caller
requested that a deputy check into the situation.
10:46 p.m., Tofte: Lutsen man, 26, arrested and
booked into jail for DUI after testing .22.
11:00 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of a strange blue
light emitting from an area just south of Okontoe
on the right side of the Gunflint Trail. It can be
seen about 60-80 yards in, and at the back of a
swamp. The caller said he looked at it through
binoculars, and it is two long blue lights, possibly
part of an experiment.
Saturday, Sept. 10
12:00 p.m., Tofte: A deputy was unable to locate a
suspicious man who was seen walking back and
forth on Highway 61, staring into the ditch and
carrying a bottle of water.
1:12 p.m., Grand Marais: Two-vehicle rear-end
accident at the stop sign on Eighth Avenue coming
out of the Rec Park.
3:06 p.m., Grand Marais: A St. Germain, Wis.,
woman, 63, did not survive a single motorcycle
accident just below the water tower.
3:36 p.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about a
modified 4-wheeler speeding on County Road 7.
5:42 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said a man was
driving around Coast Guard Point drinking from
a blue can, and she believed it to be beer. A deputy
determined he was drinking Brisk iced tea.
7:33 p.m., Lutsen: Ambulance called to the
finish line of the race at Caribou Highlands for a
dehydrated runner, 44, and another patient with a
dislocated knee.
Sunday, Sept. 11
5:55 a.m., Grand Portage: Caller said a loud party
at his neighbor’s house sounds like it has now
turned into a loud fight. A deputy checked and
everybody there was pretty much quiet and sleepy
— there was no disturbance.
1:57 p.m., Grand Marais: Reported shoplifter at a
First Street business.
10:53 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported that
water was gushing out of the back of bath house
No. 3 at the Rec Park. A deputy was able to fix the
problem.
