Monday, Aug. 22
8:01 a.m., Grand Marais: Phone lines were
out at Gunflint Lodge and fire hall 2.
9:54 a.m., Grand Portage: Report of a deer
struck by a car about five minutes north of
Grand Portage.
2:11 p.m., Lutsen: Eagle Ridge reported
that the locked key box was either pried or
broken into. Nothing seemed to be missing.
3:27 p.m., Grand Portage: Customs reported
that a family kicked a man out of their car
on Highway 61, west of Grand Marais.
He was becoming violent, and took a bag
containing his wife’s belongings. The family
was waiting at the border for the bag.
4:25 p.m., Lutsen: Two-vehicle accident
reported south of Clearview on Highway
61. There were no reports of injuries.
7:18 p.m., Lutsen: Clearview reported that
they received a call from a man saying he
and his family were lost on the Caribou
Trail and they don’t believe they can get out
before dark without flashlights.
8:44 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said he
found a beaver trap with a beaver in it at
Lace Lake, and it isn’t beaver season. It was
learned that the DNR Forestry was trapping
because of nuisance beavers, and a game
warden said he would go and pick up the
trap and beaver.
Tuesday, Aug. 23
1:35 a.m., Grand Portage: Caller requested a
deputy to remove an unwanted person from
his residence.
9:58 a.m., Lutsen: Business owner reported
that someone tried to break into the
building during the night.
11:09 p.m., Grand Marais: Fire alarm at
Sawtooth Ridges was determined to be false.
Wednesday, Aug. 24
12:44 a.m., Grand Portage: Barking dog
complaint.
10:40 a.m., Grand Marais: Report that the
county Highway Department signs on
County Road 13 have been vandalized.
WFO is spray-painted on all of them.
1:17 p.m., Tofte: Deputy called to assist with
a landlord-tenant dispute involving a father
and son.
1:44 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of a deer
with two broken legs in the ditch near Kah-
Nee-Tah.
7:56 p.m., Grand Portage: Caller said a
gunshot was fired at the marina, and he
believed it to be a man driving a black
truck. Passersby said they saw dirt fly
where the shot hit the ground. Others there
said it was probably a firecracker, but they
didn’t see or hear anything. Security looked
around for shell casings, but none were
found.
Thursday, Aug. 25
2:18 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputy called to a
domestic argument.
5:55 a.m., Grand Marais: Motorcycle-deer
accident on the Gunflint Trail just below
Pincushion. One person was taken to the
hospital for a possible hip injury.
7:02 a.m., Hovland: Caller reported an
assault with a flashlight at Esther Lake
campground. It was learned that it wasn’t
really an assault; when the reporting party
pulled into their spot, their lights flashed
onto another camper and he got mad and
waved a flashlight at them. A deputy went
to check the scene.
7:03 a.m., Schroeder: Report of white
garbage-smelling smoke near Tac Harbor.
8:37 a.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais
man, 28, arrested for domestic assault and
obstruction of the legal process.
Friday, Aug. 26
5:00 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller said a boat,
heading east close to shore, has sounded its
horn four times. A deputy investigated, but
nothing was found to be wrong.
9:46 a.m., Grand Marais: Two-vehicle
accident on Devil Track Road.
10:12 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller said her
wallet containing various forms of ID,
checks and credit cards was stolen from her
unlocked vehicle in the Johnson’s parking
lot.
11:55 a.m., Grand Marais: Gas drive-off of
$80 from Holiday.
2:36 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said his
vehicle just went off the Gunflint Trail.
There were no injuries, and the driver said
he would call for a tow.
5:29 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of smoke
toward Carlton Peak. There were no burn
permits issued for that area.
6:18 p.m., Grand Marais: Three horses got
loose and were running toward the Gunflint
Trail on the business park road. Deputy
assistance was requested to slow down
traffic.
7:00 p.m., Tofte: Gas drive-off of $56.66
from Holiday.
10:51 p.m., Grand Portage: Loud party
complaint. A deputy found everything to be
quiet and dark.
Saturday, Aug. 27
12:14 a.m., Grand Marais: Loud music
complaint about the Raven. The caller said
it was a violation of the city ordinance. A
deputy responded.
12:19 a.m., Grand Portage: Report of lots of
car and foot traffic on Townsite Road, with
cars speeding and people yelling and being
loud. A deputy checked the area, but didn’t
see much going on.
8:28 a.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about
a vendor who was setting up his booth near
City Hall. A deputy found that the permit
did not specify any area where the vendor
could set up his booth.
1:56 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller reported
that a plane attempting to take off crashed
at the east end of Devil Track Lake. There
were no injuries reported.
2:53 p.m., Grand Marais: Two calls were
received about a seagull with a broken wing,
hanging around the back kitchen door at
Dockside. A game warden was unavailable.
5:58 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said a large
area off the Poplar Lake landing has been
cut and flagged off, and there was a large
bonfire pit and lots of wood stacked up. The
caller said he suspected a large party was
expected, as the area has been used for that
before.
