Monday, Aug. 8
1:21 a.m., Grand Marais: Thunder Bay man, 60, cited for speeding.
8:20 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of heavy smoke and thick flames at the
boat access on Loon Lake, about a quarter-mile from the public landing.
It was a downed balsam burning. The fire was extinguished.
11:17 a.m., Schroeder: A 17-year-old girl fell while biking on the trail at
Temperance Traders. She suffered a broken shoulder, face cuts, and was in
a lot of pain.
12:02 p.m., Grand Marais: Reported theft of a chain saw and gas can, a
portable depth finder, and a fishing rod and reel.
2:03 p.m., Grand Portage: A counterfeit $20 bill was received at the
casino.
2:26 p.m., Grand Marais: A rock was thrown through the window of a
grader parked at County Road 6 and Meridian Road.
6:47 p.m., Lutsen: Lightning struck a cabin on Cascade Beach Road,
starting a fire. The fire was put out, and the property owner was notified.
Tuesday, Aug. 9
7:03 a.m., Grand Marais: A logger reported that someone moved a piece
of his equipment about 500 yards and took the key.
9:50 a.m., Grand Marais: Deputy requested by a woman who was having a
domestic argument with her husband. The man wanted to take their van
and go home early before their vacation ended, and leave his wife, two
kids and dog in Grand Marais without transportation. The man was given
a ride to another motel in town, where he checked in.
5:18 p.m., Grand Marais: Highway Department notified after a tree was
down on the north end of Golf Course Road.
7:09 p.m., Grand Marais: Two vehicles were drag racing down First
Avenue East from the school parking lot.
Wednesday, Aug. 10
12:46 a.m., Grand Marais: Barking dog complaint.
1:43 a.m., Grand Portage: Ambulance requested for a 43-year-old woman
who was intoxicated and passed out in her driveway.
2:03 a.m., Grand Marais: Red Lake Falls man, 30, cited for speeding.
6:42 a.m., Grand Portage: Deputy requested after a suspicious person was
found sleeping in a government vehicle. The person, who was described
as “wasted,” left the scene before a deputy arrived.
10:18 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of a husky at the school playground,
running loose all morning. The dog’s owner showed up at the same time
as the deputy.
10:45 a.m., Tofte: Caller said guests at the Surfside Resort repeatedly
trespass on her property, and have taken down and burned “private
property” signs.
9:19 p.m., Grand Portage: Alberta man, 58, cited for possession of 12
grams of marijuana after being stopped at the Port of Entry.
Thursday, Aug. 11
5:45 a.m., Grand Portage: Loud music complaint on Townsite Road.
6:32 p.m., Grand Marais: Grand Marais woman, 44, cited for inattentive
driving after a two-vehicle head-on collision on Devil Track Road.
Occupants of the vehicles were taken to the hospital to be checked out,
and a dog was fatally injured.
7:02 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said a small silver vehicle with an older
man driving stopped in the eastbound lane of the highway in front of
Dockside, and appeared to be parking there.
7:54 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller said there was a man who appeared sort
of dazed or disoriented just standing in the courthouse parking lot. He
was gone when a deputy came to check it out.
Friday, Aug. 12
9:25 a.m., Grand Marais: A small husky that was wandering around in
town was picked up and taken to the pound. The owner claimed it a short
time later.
2:23 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller complained about loose dogs near
Sawtooth Cabins that were going across the street and snapping at people.
3:20 p.m., Schroeder: Deputy requested to remove an unwanted person
from a residence.
4:40 p.m., Grand Marais: Caller complained about people staying in an
apartment who regularly cause a disturbance. The night before, the caller
said she found someone passed out in the grass. Social Services was
contacted about an 8-year-old girl, possibly an orphan, who was staying
with the partiers.
5:30 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy called to resolve a parking complaint on
South Point Road, where an RV was parked on the driveway to a cabin
without the owner’s permission.
11:36 p.m., Grand Marais: Reported gunshot on Devil Track Road was
actually a transformer popping.
Saturday, Aug. 13
9:13 a.m., Grand Portage: Barking dog complaint.
11:19 a.m., Grand Marais: Ambulance and First Responders called to
Artist Point, where a 50-year-old man fell and rolled his ankle. He was
unable to walk.
5:27 p.m., Hovland: Caller said his SUV is in the ditch at Horse Shoe Bay,
and he would have it towed.
6:40 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of suspicious people in a vehicle with
Wyoming plates going on to private property along Gunflint Lake to fish
and pick raspberries.
10:42 p.m., Grand Marais: A man who was wandering along the highway,
walking into the lane of traffic, was picked up and found to be intoxicated.
He was taken to Duluth for detox.
Sunday, Aug. 14
12:03 a.m., Grand Marais: Noise complaint about the music at Gunflint
Tavern. The caller said she didn’t want a deputy to go and speak with the
offenders, but to just let them know she called because she told them she
would be a thorn in their side.
5:01 a.m., Grand Marais: A vehicle was found in the ditch, with air bags
deployed and nobody around. A Schroeder woman, 19, was cited for
possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after
her purse was found in the vehicle.
6:24 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of three vehicles parked at Anderson’s
Cabins that had their license plates bent over during the night.
7:57 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of a smoldering fire and an abandoned
vehicle about a half-mile up the Meridian Road off County Road 6. Maple
Hill Fire Department was paged for a fire about 4 feet square. The Forest
Service also was called because several trees were cut down.
11:39 a.m., Schroeder: Report of a vehicle in a ditch about a mile east of
the county line, and people were trying to pull it out. State Patrol notified.
2:48 p.m., Grand Portage: A Cloquet juvenile, 13, was arrested for thirddegree assault after a 15-year-old boy was kicked in the head and beat up
at the wooden bridge.
4:36 p.m., Hovland: Deer struck by a vehicle.
5:35 p.m., Tofte: Gas drive-off of $25.04 from Holiday.
7:02 p.m., Grand Marais: Complaint about gunshots and foreign voices
being heard on Linnell Road. A deputy checked and found that the
people were just target shooting, and there was no foreign language being
spoken.
