Monday, July 6

12:30 a.m., Grand Marais: Noise complaint about go-carts driving around on County Road 60.

9:10 a.m., Grand Marais: Hit-and-run reported to a vehicle parked on the highway near the American Legion.

9:37 a.m., Grand Portage: Caller reported that when she returned home after a two-week absence, her screen door was torn off the hinges and the railing on the stairway was damaged. She asked that fingerprints be taken and a criminal complaint filed. It was determined the damage was caused by strong winds.

12:42 p.m., Tofte: Tofte firefighters were called to extinguish a woodpile fire of about 150 cords of birch. No buildings were threatened.

6:10 p.m., Grand Marais: A disabled vehicle was towed from the Onion River construction zone.

6:55 p.m., Grand Marais: The Rec Park reported a large unattended campfire on Sweetheart’s Bluff. A blanket and sleeping bag were left there, but nobody was around.

7:48 p.m., Grand Marais: Vandalism reported to a truck parked at Hoffman’s Pit. The windshield and driver’s side windows were smashed in.

9:12 p.m., Grand Marais: Report that a sex offender has failed to register.

Tuesday, July 7 10:10 a.m., Grand Marais: Sexual assault reported.

12:20 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of an overturned boat in the bay at Windigo Lodge, and an individual in the water. Other boaters were able to help the man out of the water and get the sailboat upright.

Wednesday, July 8

8:04 a.m., Grand Marais: Vandalism reported at the Community Center. About $1,000 worth of plants from the green roof demonstration building were taken and thrown all over the playground area. Juvenile males are the suspects.

12:20 p.m., Grand Marais: Five businesses reported receiving dishonored checks in January from the same person. Thechecks totaled $203.88.

10:15 a.m., Grand Marais: Caller requested extra patrols near the North House because pedestrians seem to be crossing the highway everywhere and not at the marked walkways, creating an unsafe situation.

10:35 a.m., Grand Marais: Report of a large tree on fire off the Superior Hiking Trail west of Caribou Trail. The Forest Service responded.

10:40 a.m., Grand Marais: The Forest Service was notified about recent thefts from vehicles parked at launch sites.

10:57 a.m., Grand Marais: A chainsaw and gas can valued at $300 were reported stolen from a Gunflint Trail work site.

11:40 a.m., Lutsen: Eight sticks of dynamite believed to be at least 30 years old were found in a shed. They were advised the dynamite was very dangerous and unstable. An EOD team came up on Saturday and destroyed 17 sticks of TNT.

3:37 p.m., Grand Marais: Suspicious activity reported on a logging road north of the Grade between the two Temperance River crossings. Thecaller said he found some tents and no one was around, but when he returned from fishing there was a guy there who appeared to be very sullen and suspicious, and there was somebody else in the tent. Later in the afternoon, the caller said there was brush, branches and limbs across the road as if the man was trying to keep people out.

9:40 p.m., Grand Marais: Noise complaint about kids on the Point with loud music.

Thursday, July 9

12:05 p.m., Grand Marais: Report of explosions on County Road 7. Thecaller said they shook the house.

6:33 p.m., Grand Marais: A drowning victim was reported on White Pine Lake.

Friday, July 10

7:35 a.m., Grand Marais: Game warden notified about a mangy coyote hanging around County Road 45 past the Cascade River bridge.

8:31 a.m., Grand Marais: Vandalism reported in the Cross River pit. A front end loader belonging to Thoreson’s was used to tip over a 40,000-pound tag trailer.

1:04 p.m., Grand Marais: Game warden notified about a man who has been seen dumping garbage at Paradise Beach, driving an ATV at the mouth of the Brule River on state park lands, and hitting golf balls into Lake Superior.

2:14 p.m., Grand Portage: Deputies notified about a woman with mental health problems who was seen at the national monument.

5:18 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy advised residents on the Gunflint Trail not to shoot at bears, but to remove bird seed and secure their garbage better.

8:46 p.m., Grand Marais: City street crews were notified that oneway signs that were posted to block off Wisconsin Street were causing confusion.

Saturday, July 11

1:50 a.m., Grand Marais: Guests at Best Western complained about a noisy group on the beach.

3:35 p.m., Grand Marais: Fire reported on Two Island Lake. Forest Service notified.

11:22 p.m., Grand Marais: Noise complaint about neighbors playing loud music outside by a bonfire.

Sunday, July 12

7:57 a.m., Grand Marais: A food stand vendor reported that about $300 was missing at the end of the day, and said it might have blown away, what with all the wind during the day. He requested to be notified if any of it was found.

10:32 a.m., Grand Marais: Theft of beer reported from a local restaurant.

12:14 p.m., Grand Marais: Single-vehicle accident reported at mile marker 133, with two injuries.

5:54 p.m., Grand Marais: Deputy spoke with a man who was with three boys near the Trading Post. A caller said the man was yelling and being rough with the boys, and one of the boys looked like he was really scared.
