The theme of the 76th annual West End Garden Club show Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the Schroeder Town Hall was Posies ‘n Prose, and it showed off the impressive creativity of the West Enders. Arrangements used multiple flower species, containers, and props to illustrate books, poems, and literary themes. Clockwise from left: Baby Buggy Ride by Donna Utecht, The Florist’s Daughter by Trudy Hahn, Love Gardening! by Ginny Storlie, and Daisy Chain by Mary Jo Roche. Roche included an excerpt from Alice in Wonderland: “So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close to her.”
The 77th annual Grand Marais Garden Club show Friday, July 15, 2011 at the Cook County Community Center was another success. Club members celebrated the theme of “Hats off to Flowers” by donning vintage hats. Many of the entries very creatively integrated hats into their arrangements. Rebecca Thompson even made a hat-shaped cake (top, center) , which she decorated with flowers. The beautiful young woman in front of the wall of hats is Grace Blomberg of Grand Marais.
