The Cook County Historical Society has accepted, with regret, the resignation of Carrie Johnson, their Executive Director. Carrie worked as a volunteer for CCHS when she moved to the area in 2005. She was later the manager for the Tofte Historical Society and wrote her master’s thesis on “close call” stories of North Shore commercial fishing. She joined the staff of the Cook County Historical Society in 2008.
In her leadership role, Carrie made many advancements for the organization. From the acquisition of the Bally Blacksmith Shop in 2013 with Minnesota Legacy grant funding to the unification of the organization’s five sites. She has provided positive growth and visibility for “Historic Cook County” the name that signifies those five sites: Cook County History Museum in the Light keeper’s House, Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, St. Francis Xavier Church at Chippewa City, the Bally Blacksmith Shop property, and the historic fish house replica with NeeGee. Together these represent much of this county’s unique past.
While Carrie will be missed, the organization has positive momentum with a great staff and new, energized board members. Plans are underway for an off-site archival storage facility in the EDA business park. This building is to be a simple structure but with specialized environmental controls ensuring the best conditions for the more than 25,000 items in their history and art collections.
The Historical Society wishes Carrie all the best in her new endeavors!
